The Fear
Gary Numan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm waiting,
I'm waiting for something to pray
I'm losing,
I'm losing and I can't get out
This feeling,
This feeling crawls inside again
I'm falling,
I'm falling down, I'm helpless
I can feel it,
Something here is all wrong
I can feel it,
Something here is all wrong
I can't stop this feeling,
Something here is all wrong
I can't stop this feeling
I remember,
I remember trying to allow
I remember,
I remember around it all
I remember,
I remember all the screaming
I remember,
I remember the fear
I can feel it,
Something here is all wrong
I can feel it,
Something here is all wrong
I can't stop this feeling,

Something here is all wrong
I can't stop this feeling

Overall Meaning

Gary Numan's song The Fear is a haunting and powerful reflection on mental anguish and inner turmoil. The lyrics speak of waiting for something to pray for, losing and feeling helpless. The feeling of falling seems to consume the singer, and despite attempts of trying to allow and remember, the fear continues to persist. The repetition of "Something here is all wrong" and "I can't stop this feeling" underscores the feeling of helplessness and a lack of control.

The lyrics suggest that the singer may be struggling with anxiety or depression. The feeling of something being "all wrong" may be a manifestation of irrational fears and a sense of impending doom. The repeated use of "I remember" suggests that the singer may be plagued by past traumas or memories. The use of the word "screaming" adds a sense of urgency and desperation to the song, as if the singer is crying out for help.

Overall, The Fear is a poignant representation of the emotional turmoil that many people face on a daily basis. It is a reminder that sometimes, despite our best efforts, we cannot shake the feeling of fear that can paralyze us.

I So seriously love this track, always did.
The darkness and the haunting eerieness of the song just makes me want to play it FOREVER - alongside Mick Karn and Peter Murphy's InGladAloness EP too of course, that is So Very special to me too.
I Love all Tubeway Army/Gary Numan music but I did always seem to fall in love with his B sides a terrific lot more at times, they are shit hot.
Used to eat, sleep and breathe Gary Numan growing up.
The bloke's a very clever man indeed but an awesome and cool dude.
Had this single, had everything Gary ever made I'm sure, would buy it religiously, just had to have it in my collection.
The bloke's a genious with sounds, images and different styles.
I'm very proud to say that I am his - ALL TIME-NUMBER ONE FAN-in the whole of the world. 😎

Will check out the Karn EP, cheers, could never get my head round why Numan released all his best stuff on B sides, just nuts, often the B side was better than the single FFS, then again he employed his dad as his manager

Was this on Dance or when Mick Karn was with Gary Numan? The bass work sounds very familiar :)

Interesting. Thanks! The way they were playing reminded me of Numan's lineup during Dance
