We Take Mystery
Gary Numan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Confiscate letters like D.E.B.
No natural course of things for her to expect
Withdraw the feelings 'You can, you can't'
I called your number as you told the world

Something is wrong

There is no longer any normal to me
You're my assassin but you can't see the crime
Pointless possessions of me & you & greed
I looked at you mistaking needles for eyes

Something is wrong

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Gary Numan's "We Take Mystery (To Bed)" are quite cryptic and open to interpretation. It appears to be a message from Numan to someone who has either wronged him, or with whom he had a complicated relationship. The first verse suggests that letters have been confiscated, possibly by the government agency known as the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration). The next line is more difficult to understand, but it could mean that the situation is unnatural, or that the person in question is not used to receiving bad news. The next line is a command of some kind, possibly indicating that the person is giving contradictory signals about their feelings. Finally, Numan calls the person, but they seem to have already spread information about him to the world.

The chorus expresses the feeling that something is wrong, and this could refer to the overall tone of the song, which is quite dark and paranoid. The second verse continues with this theme of paranoia and confusion, as Numan describes the person as his "assassin," but they don't seem to recognize that they've done anything wrong. The next line may suggest that the relationship was based on materialism and greed, rather than real feelings. The final line of the verse is the most striking, as Numan describes looking at the person and seeing needles instead of eyes. This could mean that they are drug addicts, or that they have some other dangerous quality.

The funky fretless bass in this album is addictive, it was a strong step in a new direction but I loved it. It had an uplifting feel even though the lyrics had serious context. The sound is a tad muffled on this video compared to vinyl or cd, but it's still one of my favorites.

Pino Palladino, taking inspiration from Mick Karn of Japan.

@marioandtyler

I have to admit, when I first bought the album, I hated it. But I have to admit, it has really grown on me. It's a great mix of funk and synths. The Image Is is my favorite song from it.

@ajs41

Why did you hate it originally?

@marioandtyler

@@ajs41 I have no idea, maybe because Dance before it had been so wonderfully experimental, and so it was a little different compared to that one in that aspect.

@porkchopgmx1804

I love how he plays every single role in this video
