Gatas Parlament were the first Norwegian rappers to rap in Norwegian. The pioneers of Norwegian Rap, such as Warlocks or A-Team, rapped in English. Gatas Parlament started out in 1993, taking the name Kveldens Høydepunkt (Highlight of the Night). Don Martin did not take to the name, and it was therefore changed. Later, they attended a public speech by Carl I. Hagen, the chairman of the right-wing party Fremskrittspartiet, where they threw eggs and rotten fruit at Hagen. This caused Hagen to comment that gatens parlament ruled the country, and the three rappers stuck with the name (the riksmål-wording of gaten was dropped for gata, more fitting for their sociolect).
The band caused controversy in Norway with their video "Antiamerikansk Dans" (Anti American Dance) together with the Swedish rap artist Promoe. In addition, their website killhim.nu ("Kill him Now"), which put a bounty on the assassination of George W. Bush, caused the American embassy in Norway to react, and the website was subsequently shut down.

Gatas Parlament Lyrics

Gutta i Gatas Parlament
Blitzere
Som fikser det med platespillere og miksere
Skandalemakere Skandalemakere
Skandalemakere Skandalemakere
The lyrics of "Skandalemakere" by Gatas Parlament depict the group's rebellious and provocative nature. The first verse mentions how the group finds themselves in trouble once again, facing scrutiny and criticism. They proudly declare that they have no regrets for their disrespectful treatment towards authority figures, specifically referring to the police. The line "fuck krompen" is a slang term for "fuck the police."
The next verse describes an incident where the group members were arrested on suspicion of car theft. The song received attention from Dagsavisen, a newspaper, for featuring an uncleared sample. It is revealed that the rap group had borrowed sounds from American musicians without permission.
The lyrics also touch upon the music industry's demands to commercialize their art, but the group remains unfazed and delighted to see the popularity of their work. They mention the ease of pirating their album online and how they often appropriate and steal elements that do not originally belong to them. However, they challenge anyone who criticizes their actions, suggesting that they can go and perform a certain act on their genitals.
The song also critiques the mainstream media, particularly NRK (the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation), for its selective promotion and airplay. The group believes their music deserves more recognition, given its rawness and the message it spreads. They emphasize their passion for revolution and the need to break free from societal constraints. The chorus repeats the idea of being "skandalemakere" or scandal makers, activists who use their turntables and mixers to create change.
In summary, the lyrics of "Skandalemakere" capture Gatas Parlament's rebellious and defiant attitude towards authority figures, the music industry, and mainstream media. They urge for a revolution and a shift in societal norms, all while unapologetically stirring controversy.
