Gates of Ishtar Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

As I tear the blindfold from my eyes
I can see that my fears were not born from a dream
From the touch of wings my tears turns red
And like a withering flower my life ends

I scream in pain, but my soul is burning to ashes
I dream again, But my eyes are sleeping forever
As the tears runs red down over my face
I remember the light of the dawn on my bed
But my eyes are forever dreaming in red
And my tears will not ever extinguish the flames

I scream again, but my soul is burning to ashes
I dream in pain, but my tears are falling forever

In my eyes burns the flames of the dreaming souls
And in my heart burns the candle, The blackest of fear

Why can't I watch the dawn once again?
To live in eternal dusk is my deepest fear

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Gates of Ishtar's song "Tears" portrays a vivid depiction of a person experiencing intense pain and fear, possibly caused by some form of supernatural or otherworldly presence. The first verse speaks of the singer removing a blindfold from their eyes and realizing that their fears were not just a dream. The touch of wings makes their tears turn red, symbolizing the presence of danger or evil. The singer likens their life to a withering flower, indicating that they feel like they are slowly dying.

The chorus repeats the phrases "I scream in pain, but my soul is burning to ashes" and "I dream again, but my eyes are sleeping forever." These lines contrast the singer's physical and emotional states, suggesting that they feel like they are trapped in a never-ending nightmare.

The second verse continues with the theme of the singer's tears turning red, signifying their intense emotional pain. They recall a happier time when they remember the light of the dawn on their bed. However, their tears are forever falling in red, and they feel like they are trapped in a cycle of suffering that they cannot escape.

The bridge of the song speaks about the flames of the dreaming souls burning in the singer's eyes and the blackest of fear burning in their heart. The final line of the song, "To live in eternal dusk is my deepest fear," represents the singer's fear of being trapped in a state between life and death or being perpetually consumed by their fears and pain.

Overall, "Tears" by Gates of Ishtar is a powerful portrayal of intense emotional pain and fear. The lyrics use vivid imagery to create a haunting and surreal atmosphere that engages listeners with its raw honesty and sincerity.

A great inspirational drummer in my early metal days, RIP

Serob77

yeah this dude was TIGHT! Very precise. I prefer to hear a bit more expression and looseness and this guy was a little mechanical but he let the rest of the band do all that and more. When i hear him use that ride bell though i feel like he is really letting it out, and it sounds great.

Nok

@Serob77 yeah man. Like I said he gave me a great foundation for my start but eventually I found drummers like Martin Lopez and Gene Hoglan more my style

Serob77

@Nok Great drummers. Sean Reinert is my all time favorite

Theunie Steyn

Hail Gates of Ishtar! its shocking how underrated they are, such a sick band.

Serob77

Gates of Ishtar was such a great Melodic Death Metal bad. They started earlier, before it was extremely popular, and they broke up before their music had a chance to reach many ears, the way At The Gates and Death could with Slaughter Of The Soul and Symbolic respectively. They need to Reunite now that The Duskfall is over with. They could really make it big with their traditional gothenburg sound.
