In The Name Of The Father
Gavin Friday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Come to me
Come lie beside me
Oh, don't deny me your love

Make sense of me
Walk through my doorway
Don't hide in the hallway
Oh love, step over

I'll follow you down
I'll follow you down

In the name of whiskey
In the name of song
You didn't look back
You didn't belong

In the name of reason
In the name of hope
In the name of religion
In the name of dope

In the name of freedom
You drifted away
To see the sun shining
On some one else's day

In the name of United
And the BBC
In the name of Georgie Best
And LSD

In the name of the Father
And his wife the Spirit
You said you did not
They said you did it

In the name of justice
In the name of fun
In the name of the Father
In the name of the Son

Call to me
No one is listening
I'm waiting to hear from you, love

Stay with me
It's cold in the ground
But there's peace in the sound
Of the white and the black
Spilling over

I'll follow you down

Overall Meaning

The first two verses of Gavin Friday and Bono's In The Name of The Father are an invitation to their lover to join them. In the first verse, there seems to be a sense of urgency, an imploring of the lover to come to them and not deny them their love. The second verse is a continuation of the invitation, with the singer asking their lover to "make sense" of them and not hide in the hallway, but rather walk through the doorway. This seems to suggest that the lovers have had some misunderstandings, and that the singer wants to clear things up.

The chorus of the song is a meditation on various themes "in the name" of which the singer has wandered away from their lover. These include whiskey, song, reason, hope, religion, and dope. The singer mentions that they "didn't belong" and that they "drifted away" in the name of freedom. The second half of the chorus is a rapid-fire list of more things that the singer has been drawn to, including the BBC, Georgie Best, LSD, and the Father, the Spirit, and the Son. The meaning of this section is open to interpretation, but it seems to be about the myriad things that can pull people away from love and connection.

The last verse of the song returns to the singer's sense of longing and loneliness. They call out to their lover, saying "no one is listening," but still waiting to hear from them. The line "It's cold in the ground, but there's peace in the sound of the white and the black spilling over" is enigmatic, but perhaps suggests that even in death there can be a transcendent unity.
