James won Ireland's answer to the Mercury (the Choice Music Prize for 'Song of the Year') and saw his debut EP ('Say Hello') remain on the Irish chart for over 6 months. This rise and development in his home market has gained James sell-out headline dates and wider support tours with the likes of Lianne La Havas, Beth Orton, Kodaline and Marina & The Diamonds.
A snapshot of this ascent, 'Live at Whelans' is a selection of new and old songs performed in the stripped-back environment of a rapturously-received hometown show. The first track to be lifted from it, 'Nervous', is a pin-drop account of a one-sided relationship: from that initial fear of your first meeting to the gradual realisation, by the end of the song, that perhaps they were never who you thought they were (and it's best to forget about them).
James released his eagerly-anticipated debut album, ‘Bitter Pill’ on March 11th 2016 – having already gone Top 5, been certified Platinum and winner of Choice Music Prize’s ‘Song of the Year’ in his native Ireland in 2013 and 2016. Following a sold-out London show at KOKO, support across Spotify (Spotlight Artists for 2016), Radio 1, Virgin Radio, Beats 1 and Radio X, Gavin had an extensive UK tour, European tour, US tour and Australian dates, that featured Shepherd’s Bush Empire on October 7th 2016 in London and 3Arena on December 2016 in Dublin. Gavin has over 150 million total streams on Spotify already and live performances on Late Late Show with James Corden, Jimmy Kimmel Live, BBC One Show and C’est A Vous.
The Middle

And don't ever let me go
In your heart I found a home
Somewhere I've never been before
No one knows
Just where they wanna go
Live your life in growing old
But we could start a fire
We could start a fire
I feel you in my bones, oh oh oh oh
From my head down to my toes, oh oh oh oh
And I know it's a long way down
While we're caught in between
Won't you stay in the middle with me?
I will keep you warm
When the years make you feel cold
I will follow where you go
I'll be there when you're lonely
I know it's strange
Living life in different ways
I swear, I'd give you all my days if I could
I feel you in my bones, oh oh oh oh
From my head down to my toes, oh oh oh oh
And I know it's a long way down
While we're caught in between
Won't you stay in the middle with me?
Can we rush in?
I know there's no way the lights go out
When you're so far under my skin
I'll breathe you in
Because the thought of ever losing you
Would surely turn my life to blue
I feel you in my bones, oh oh oh oh
From my head down to my toes, oh oh oh oh
And I know it's a long way down
While we're caught in between
Won't you stay in the middle with me?
The lyrics of Gavin James's song The Middle speaks about the security of being with someone whom you consider the home of your heart. The first two lines of the song, "Hold me close and don't ever let me go", set the tone for the rest of the song. The singer then goes on to talk about how being with their partner makes them feel like they have found a home they have never known before. The coming of age theme of trying to find one's purpose in life is also present in the song, as the lyrics go on to say, "no one knows just where they wanna go. Live your life in growing old. Simple songs and same old stories." The singer admits to living their life in different ways, but they would give up everything they have for their partner.
The chorus of the song, "I feel you in my bones from my head down to my toes, and I know it's a long way down while we're caught in between, won't you stay in the middle with me," speaks about how the singer wants to cherish every moment they have with their partner. The uncertainty of life is acknowledged, but the singer wants their partner to stay with them through it all. The bridge of the song goes on to express the singer's fear of ever losing their partner and how it would turn their once happy life into a world of blues.
Overall, the song talks about the comfort and security of being with someone you consider home, the uncertainty of life and the fear of losing a loved one, and the need to cherish every moment you spend with that special someone.
