Gaz Coombes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Is sitting around in the sand
The water's high and the time hides you there
It all leads to the prize and to the girl in mind
The endless race to the end of the line

Ooh. Aah. Ooh. Aah. Aah.

It's alright, the end's in sight. Worry fades the soul away.
I'd take the hurricane for you.
Who am I? Who am I? I couldn't operate
God knows I want it too.

It's alright, the end's in sight. Worry fades the soul away.
I'd take the hurricane for you.
Who am I? Who am I? I couldn't operate
God knows I want it too.

God knows I want it too

I'm looking out I feel the lights of the cars
Innocence, falling pain. If I make the night, I'm home and dry.

You love, in the morning, hearing the city's song
Lay your heart down on mine
No need to cry, we're home and dry

Ooh, ooh, aah. Ooh, ooh, aah.
Ooh, ooh, aah. Ooh, ooh, aah.

It's alright, the end's in sight. Worry fades the soul away.
I'd take the hurricane for you.
Who am I? Who am I? I couldn't operate
God knows I want it too.

It's alright, the end's in sight. Worry fades the soul away.
I'd take the hurricane for you.
Who am I? Who am I? I couldn't save that soul
God knows I want it, want it, want it, want it all
God knows I want it, want it, want it, want it too

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song '20/20' by Gaz Coombes are a reflection on life's endless pursuit of achievement and success, with the underlying fear of losing oneself in the process. The opening lines, "Is sitting around in the sand, The water's high and the time hides you there," suggest a moment of peaceful introspection, but the lines that follow hint at the ultimate goal being someone they like. The line "The endless race to the end of the line," identifies this craving for something unattainable.

The chorus, "It's alright, the end's in sight. Worry fades the soul away," acknowledges that the singer's search for something is coming to an end, and the continuous pursuit can become a burden that wears down the soul. It continues with the lyrics, "I'd take the hurricane for you. Who am I? Who am I? I couldn't operate. God knows I want it too," showing the singer's willingness to face extreme circumstances to achieve what they want.

The final verse brings the song back to a moment of reflection and hope, "You love, in the morning, hearing the city's song Lay your heart down on mine No need to cry, we're home and dry," suggesting a moment of intimacy and the idea that the singer has finally found what they were searching for. Overall, '20/20' is a song that reflects the various stages of life's pursuit of happiness, from the initial moments of introspection to the final destination.

Best thing I can say about this is that I was never a Supergrass fan at all. It’s not bad music, it’s just not my cup of tea and that’s perfectly fine.

A friend said “You’ve got to listen to this”. It was the title track from Matador and was blown away, then again when I found out it was Gaz.

Absolutely one of my favourite artists. Such a talented and versatile songwriter.
