This We Celebrate
Gaza Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
So many of us will never know the labor and the grit.
And I'm not afraid of our efficiency
And I understand we have invented ourselves out of a job.
And I imagine like anything else our cycle has come around.
An old womb. Our soil is used.
The noble thing would be to plow it under.
So we can look forward to socio-economical mass graves.
We can attest, native bones make the best fertilizer.
The lyrics of Gaza's "This We Celebrate" is a commentary on the devaluation of human labor in the modern world. The opening lines "To prepare the ground, to plant the seeds" point towards the hard work that laborers do to create something of value. However, the lyrics then go on to say that "So many of us will never know the labor and the grit" implying that the true value and effort put in by these laborers is often ignored or dismissed in our modern times.
The line "And I'm not afraid of our efficiency" embodies the sentiment that the pursuit of efficiency and productivity has led to the dehumanization of the labor force. The following line "And I understand we have invented ourselves out of a job" points towards the advancements in technology that have made many jobs redundant.
The lyrics go on to suggest that the current cycle of innovation has come to an end, and it is time to "plow under" the old ways and start anew. The final lines of the song "We can attest, native bones make the best fertilizer" is a particularly poignant commentary on the disregard for the value of life and labor in a profit-driven world.
