Desde pequeño comenzó demostrando dotes excepcionales para el canto. Recibió una instrucción musical adecuada que le permitió aprovechar al máximo las potencialidades de su voz. Se ha podido establecer que luego complementaría su formación musical con clases recibidas de parte del tenor italiano Tito Schipa, durante el tiempo en que éstos coincidieron en su estancia en Buenos Aires, Argentina, años después. Al cumplir los 20 años, Genaro Salinas ya era un tenor de condiciones vocales extraordinarias.

Su voz, según críticos musicales, recuerda la voz de Beniamino Gigli, quien fue considerado como una de las voces de tenor más bellas en los años 30 y 40, además de ciertas muchas analogías estilísticas, al punto tal de que a Salinas se le consideró como una especie de “Gigli del Bolero”, género en el que se especializaba.
No obstante, Salinas se le ve más ligado desde el punto de visto musical a Tito Schipa, ya que su uso de la media voz, de los matices, de las modulaciones, de los diminuendos y de las filaturas se acercan a la musicalidad de este tenor italiano. Se puede decir que por su arquitectura vocal se acerca Schipa. Pero que por emisión de la línea del canto se acerca a Gigli, aunque su sentimiento y por sus expresiones en lo musical, a José Mojica y a Alfonso Ortiz Tirado, a quienes admiró, sin seguirles las huellas. Salinas tuvo su propio camino, distinto a sus antecesores
Genaro tenía una voz bella y robusta como la de Gigli, musical como la de Schipa y expresiva como la de Enrico Caruso. Poseía una extensión amplia que le permitía alcanzar un Sol Contragrave (G1) en “Soy Marinero” hasta un Do de pecho en “Novillero”. Dentro de sus características vocales resaltan su control de la emisión y el paso fácil de notas graves a agudas y viceversa, sin cambios en la consistencia, el dominio del passagio, y la conservación de la línea de canto y con un acertado manejo de matices.
La voz de Genaro Salinas se caracteriza por su dulzura, por la excepcional belleza de su timbre, así como por su musicalidad y perfección técnica. Muchos la consideran la voz más hermosa de cuantas han escuchado.
