Something's Wrong
Gene Clark Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hours of joy when I was just a boy
And never wrong I knew
Kites of red would fly above my head
The birds would sing their song
Now something's wrong
Where the Sherwood used to be
Neon brambles now I can see
Fields of corn on early summer mornings
Or late afternoons
Anytime there was a place to find
Where life seemed not so soon
Now all too soon
Is this where I used to be
Still remembering what is me
And I won't even try
To find a reason why
I must live here just to die
Now something's wrong

Where the Sherwood used to be
Neon brambles now I can see

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Gene Clark's "Something's Wrong" reflect the feeling of nostalgia and loss that the singer experiences as they revisit a childhood place that has been replaced by something unrecognizable. The song begins by describing the singer's childhood, a time of happiness and certainty, where they used to watch kites and listen to the birds singing. However, as the singer revisits the place, they notice that it has transformed significantly. Where once green fields and the titular Sherwood could be found, now they see neon brambles and fields of corn instead. The singer is reminded of their own mortality when they declare "I must live here just to die," indicating that the changes they see before them are not only physical, but spiritual as well.

Returning to this song after seeing a horrifying picture of the home where I grew up with all its beauty destroyed, including the stump of a truly gorgeous weeping willow tree where I used to sit and daydream for hours.

I'm sorry, that's so sad!

Never saw some of these photos of Geno. Great artist. He had a dark quality about him for sure. Wish he was still alive. Died at a time in 1991 when he was an asterisk in music history. Nobody cared. How things have changed. His legacy has really grown since then.

@Indigo Mariana Thanks for the petition link. Signed. Incredibly talented and creative songwriter. Can't believe he isn't there already.

+Indigo Mariana (Ingrid) Same here. Lady Fortune was never on Gene Clark's side while he was alive. Maybe now we can do him some justice. I just suscribed, so please keep them coming.

Indigo Mariana

+Jorge Espinosa it's my pleasure! I hope it happens!
