Echoes
Gene Clark with the Gosdin Brothers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

On the streets you look again
At the places you have been
Or the moments that you thought
Where am I going
Though the walls are like the dead
They reflect the things you've said
And the echoes in your head continue showing
Near the castles you can build
Out of dreams you half fulfilled
Won't keep out all of the ill wind that is blowing
And you look still for a trace
Of an opening in a place
Where you find the life that you were used to knowing
You can walk out in the night
And be sure that its alright
To exaggerate the world that's only being
You can watch Regina dance
Through the crystal panes of glass
Yet you know that there's so much that she's not seeing
Still you hold one precious thought
After all this time you've sought
That she might be just protecting what she longs for
And her eyes are veiled with black
Cause she plays she can look back
At the love she wanted so but says is no more
The lights go on, commence the cold
As your senses will be sold
To the parrot watchers mimicing no reasons
To pretend that what they are
From the fact completely far
While the truth may be betrayal, lies and treason
Build their towers in the sand
Down the roads at their command
When the kingdom is the innocence they're stealing
And infection easily spreads

To the searching, twisted heads
As they team up to tear down each others feeling

Overall Meaning

The song "Echoes" by Gene Clark with the Gosdin Brothers talks about reflection, nostalgia, and the ever-changing nature of life. The song begins by describing the feeling of being lost and unsure about the direction one's life is taking. The lyrics also mention walls that reflect the things you've said and the echoes in your head, highlighting the idea that memories and past mistakes can sometimes haunt us.

The lyrics then move on to talk about how we sometimes build castles out of dreams that we only partially fulfill. The metaphorical castles, however, cannot keep out the ill winds that are blowing, indicating that no matter how much we hope or dream, sometimes life can take unexpected turns. The song talks about searching for an opening in a place where we can find the life we were used to knowing, which could mean going back to the past or finding new opportunities in the present.

The lyrics also mention watching Regina dance through the crystal panes of glass, indicating that sometimes, we can witness beauty in the world, even though we know it's not the whole picture. In the end, the song talks about the betrayal, lies, and treason that can come from pretending to be something we're not and tearing each other down instead of being supportive.

Overall, "Echoes" is a reflective song that delves into the complexities of nostalgia, life, and relationships. The lyrics express the universal human experience of feeling lost and searching for meaning, with the hope that we can still find something precious amid the chaos.

This album... Its like he left the Byrds..and they immediately took him across the hall.. YOU are making a solo album!! RIGHT NOW!! He is wearing the same outfit as in the Byrds... they knew his natural genius... and wanted to capture it, thus this great album... Alot of girls I think bought the album because he was a handsome man.. but were disappointed because the album wasn't bubblegum sounding... Sorry Gene was not a bubblegum musician.. his music was serious.. even melancholy.. as it was with the Byrds.. they tried to fit the Byrds into the Shindig pop dance genre.. they were not that, at least in my eyes.. He was a genius beyond his time

I am 64 and I remember all along how brilliant and talented Gene Clark was. I am really glad that younger generations are now discovering this genius.

Michael Neal

He did a lot of exceptional solo work. He's getting his due now. A bit late but glad to see it.

J Cavazos

Michael Neal. There's some good songs on this album.

Sir Francis Drake

Gene Clark was a Diamond in the Rough . Most talented Byrd and his Solo albums are superb. I Miss Him.

Asokan Ponnusamy

One of the greatest ever and unlikely to be solved mysteries is why Gene Clark is not up there with the Byrds (as a solo singer), the Beatles, the Beachboys, the Stones or even Elvis.

Cosmonauta Films

The Beatles and Elvis? Because he's not at their level. There you go. Mystery solved.
