On Green Dolphin Street
Gene Harris & The Three Sounds Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It seems like a dream, yet I know it happened
A man, a maid, a kiss, and then goodbye
Romance was the theme
And we were the players
I never think of this without a sigh

Lover, one lovely day
Love came, planning to stay
Green Dolphin Street supplied the setting
The setting for nights beyond forgetting
And through these moments apart memories live in my heart
When I recall the love I found on
I could kiss the ground on Green Dolphin Street

Lover, one lovely day
Love came, planning to stay
Green Dolphin Street supplied the setting
The setting for nights beyond forgetting
And through these moments apart memories live in my heart

When I recall the love I found on
On Green Dolphin Street

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Gene Harris and The Three Sound's "On Green Dolphin Street" recounts a bittersweet memory of a love that was found and subsequently lost. The first stanza sets the scene of a romantic encounter that appears surreal, yet the singer knows that it happened. This initial meeting left a lasting impression on the singer as they reflect on it with a sigh. The second stanza elaborates on the love that blossomed between the two individuals, with Green Dolphin Street providing the backdrop for their romance. As the love grew stronger, the memories made on this street became unforgettable. However, this love did not last, and the two individuals were separated, leaving an indelible mark on the singer's heart. The lyrics express a longing to return to that time and place when they found love, a sentiment that is all too relatable for anyone who has gone through a similar experience.

Overall, the song showcases the power and impact of love on our lives, even when it doesn't work out. It encapsulates the beauty, the pain, and the nostalgia that love can evoke in our memories.

The first jazz group that I ever saw live in 1960  at a club on Los Feliz Drive in L.A. - the four of us were under age, yet we snuck in and heard a great group - this whole album is "A Classic!" - this recording was the theme song of the great L.A. jazz DJ Ken Jones in the 60's- "KEEP ENJOYING THE SOUNDS OF JAZZ" ("Green Dolphin Street" has always been my favorite Jazz Standard)

1961-I saw this group too in a little club in the alley up from the Troubadour in West Hollywood. Always has been my very favorite.
