Pitney, a pop rock pioneer, had his greatest success overall in Britain, first travelling there after his first self penned hit in 1961. "I Wanna Love My Life Away" hit #26 on the UK singles chart & just broke into the top 40 in the US.
His early music recorded for the "musicor" label was romantic, lonely and dramatic, fitting in alongside contemporaries like Buddy Holly, Neil Sedaka, Roy Orbison & serves as an audio time capsule of a more innocent time.
Gene Pitney - Yesterday's Hero...
Gene was a Brill Building songwriter who even before his singing career took off, had written one of Ricky Nelson's biggest hits "Hello Mary Lou". He had been helped out initially in his career by Burt Bacharach & Hal David, and later recorded some of their songs which became big hits like "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" and the classic "Only Love Can Break A Heart". At the time his "Only Love..." recording was a #2 chart hit, he had written the number 1 song that week; "He's A Rebel" (A Phil Spector production recorded by The Crystals). All in all Pitney himself recorded 16 top 40 songs in the US from 1961 to 1968.
Gene's biggest popularity was in England, where he used the Rolling Stones publicist Andrew Loog Oldham to get his fame established, which lasted there to the day of his death. In the UK, Gene had 40 top-40 charting hits through 1974. He finally hit #1 in the UK in 1990, performing a duet with Marc Almond of Soft Cell. Pitney died April 5 on tour in 2006. He was found by his tour manager fully clothed on his bed at a Hilton Hotel in Cardiff , shortly after performing a concert.
All the Way

It's no good unless he loves you all the way
Happy to be near you
When you need someone to cheer you all the way
[Chorus]
Taller than the tallest tree is
That's how it's got to feel
That's how deep it goes if it's real
When somebody needs you
It's no good unless he needs you all the way
Through the good or lean years
And for all the in-between years come what may
Who knows where the road will lead us
Only a fool would say
But if you'll let me love you
It's for sure I'm gonna love you all the way all the way
So, if you'll let me love you
It's for sure I'm gonna love you all the way all the way
In Gene Pitney's song "All the Way," Pitney sings about the importance of loving someone "all the way." He emphasizes that it's not enough for someone to love you partially, but that true love requires loving someone through the happy times and the difficult times. Pitney sings that when someone loves you, they should love you completely, and be happy to be near you when you need someone to cheer you up.
In the chorus, Pitney sings about the depth of love that is required for true happiness. He compares the love between two people to a tree that reaches the sky and the deep blue sea, emphasizing that the love has to be deep and all-encompassing to be meaningful. Pitney then continues to sing about how important it is to need someone all the way, not just during good times but also during rough patches in life.
The song ends on a note of uncertainty about the future, but with a pledge of complete devotion. Pitney sings that no one can predict where the road of life will take them, but if the person he is singing to lets him love them, he will love them completely and will be devoted to them in all situations.
