Hello Mary Lou
Gene Pitney Lyrics

Hello Mary Lou goodbye heart
Sweet Mary Lou I'm so in love with you
I knew Mary Lou we'd never part
So hello Mary Lou goodbye heart

You passed me by on sunny day
Flashed those big brown eyes my way
And ooh I wanted you for ever more
Now I'm not one that gets around
I swear my feet stuck to the ground
And though I never did meet you before

I said hello Mary Lou goodbye heart
Sweet Mary Lou I'm so in love with you
(I love you)
I knew Mary Lou we'd never part
So hello Mary Lou goodbye heart

I saw your lips I heard your voice
Believe me I just had no choice
While horses couldn't make me stay away
I thought about a moonlit night
My arms around you good and tight
That's all I had to see for me to say

Hey hey hello Mary Lou goodbye heart
Sweet Mary Lou I'm so in love with you (I love you)

I knew Mary Lou we'd never part
So hello Mary Lou goodbye heart

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Gene Pitney's song "Hello Mary Lou" speak about a man who falls in love with Mary Lou at first sight. He confesses his love for her and makes a promise to never leave her. The chorus, "Hello Mary Lou goodbye heart," refers to the man's heart being given to Mary Lou, leaving no room for anyone else in his life. He knew from the moment he saw her that she was the one for him.

In the first verse, the man describes how Mary Lou caught his attention with her beauty and charm. Despite being a man who "does not get around," he could not resist her. He was drawn to her and knew that they would never be apart. The second verse goes on to describe how much he thinks about her, day and night. He imagines holding her close on a moonlit night, and the thought of that alone is enough to make him say goodbye to anyone who stands in the way of their relationship.

Overall, the song portrays a classic love story of two people who fall in love at first sight and promise to be together forever. The catchy chorus and sweet lyrics make it an easy and enjoyable tune to sing along to.

While I adore Rick's version I am in love with the fact Gene wrote this, both are two of the best of all-time.

Bonjour Mary Lou
Adriano Celentano
Bonjour mary lou
Doux amour
Ma chère Mary Lou, je penserai à toi
Je connais Mary Lou
Tu vas me manquer
Je reviendrai à Mary Lou
Salut au revoir
Un jour tu me regardais
Et mon coeur a tremblé
Ces yeux noirs
Je ne les oublie plus
Alors j'étais près de toi
J'ai promis de t'aimer
Et tu étais la seule passion
Je dis: bonjour, Mary Lou
Doux amour
Ma chère Mary Lou
Je penserai à toi
Je sais, Mary Lou
Tu vas me manquer
Je serai de retour, Mary Lou
Salut, au revoir!
Loin je dois aller
Mais je ne t'abandonnerai pas
J'ai presque à vous saluer
Mon cheval sait quoi di
L'ancienne route trouvera
Et comme le vent
Il t'apportera à moi
Bonjour mary lou
Doux amour
Ma chère Mary Lou, je penserai à toi
Je connais Mary Lou
Tu vas me manquer
Je reviendrai à Mary Lou
Salut au revoir
Je reviendrai à Mary Lou
Salut au revoir

Rick and Gene were friends as far as my research took me and Rick's version was the ultimate but I like Gene's version because he wrote it and if you don't believe it, check the credits. He did. He was far mare famous for Mecca, I'm Gonna Be Strong, 24 Hours From Tulsa, etc. so this one was given to Rick.

I like Rick’s version better but Gene had some really good songs

Are you the REAL John Stewart? I was just tryin' to engage people away from their cares and have some fun. We need it!

Pretty anemic guitar break, I would have figured Gene Pitney would have the best.
