Summers graduated from Duncanville High School in 1957 and attended Arlington State College, now known as the University of Texas at Arlington. That same year, he formed the rockabilly band The Rebels and performed on Joe Bill's Country Picnic on KRLD, where they were spotted by songwriter Jed Tarver. This led to the band being signed by newly-found Jan Records. Their first record was released on February 1, 1958, under the name of Gene Summers & His Rebels.

Almost Persuaded
Gene Summers Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Your charmin' ways just
Drive me crazy
Ooooh, guess I'm gonna fall in love
Almost persuaded to say I do care
To say I love you
I wouldn't dare
CHORUS:
You're the one that's on my mind
Can't forget about you
I think about you all the time
Wish you felt the way I do
INSTRUMENTAL BREAK:
Almost persuaded to love you baby
Your charmin' ways just
Drive me crazy
Ooooh, guess I'm gonna fall in love
Almost persuaded I must confess
That your love means
My happiness
Ooooh, you belong with me
You and me
You with me
You and me....(FADE)
NOTE: Gary Mears (who composed "Almost Persuaded") was, also, founding member and lead-singer of the Original Casuals who had a number one hit in 1957 with another Mears composition "So Tough" on Backbeat Records.
The lyrics to Gene Summers's song Almost Persuaded tell the story of a person who finds themselves on the brink of falling in love with someone, but they are holding back their true feelings. The singer is "almost persuaded to love you baby" but is hesitant because they are fearful of getting hurt. The song talks about the love interest's charm and effect on the singer's emotions, which are driving them crazy. Despite their feelings, the singer admits that they "wouldn't dare" to say they love that person, but they know it won't be too long before they fall in love.
The chorus speaks directly to the love interest, acknowledging that they are always on the singer's mind, and they think about them all the time. They express a wish that the love interest would feel the same way and alludes to the fact that the singer is in unrequited love. The instrumental break injects a sense of urgency to the song, providing a moment to reflect on the feelings that the singer is struggling with.
