Summers graduated from Duncanville High School in 1957 and attended Arlington State College, now known as the University of Texas at Arlington. That same year, he formed the rockabilly band The Rebels and performed on Joe Bill's Country Picnic on KRLD, where they were spotted by songwriter Jed Tarver. This led to the band being signed by newly-found Jan Records. Their first record was released on February 1, 1958, under the name of Gene Summers & His Rebels.

Do you think that I will sit and cry
Even if my heart should tell me so
Darlin' I would never let you go
Just because you think that you're so smart
Runnin' around and breakin' lovers' hearts
Before I'd let this thing happen to me
[Chorus:]
I know you think you're smart
Just goin' around, breakin', lovers' hearts
Just because I want someone who's kind
With a heart as good and true as mine
But maybe I am askin' for too much
Darlin' please don't ever break my heart
[Chorus]
The lyrics of Gene Summers's song "Just Because" depicts a situation where the singer's lover has left and said goodbye, but he does not intend to sit and cry about it. He informs the departing lover that he would never let her go, even if his heart were to tell him so. The lyrics reveal that the singer is defiant and does not intend to let this situation happen to him. He would rather swim in the sea than allow himself to be heartbroken.
The second verse suggests that the departing lover thinks she's smart for running around, breaking lovers' hearts. However, the singer assures her that he would never allow her to break his heart, and he'd rather swim in the sea than let that happen. The chorus conveys the message that the singer knows that the departing lover thinks she's smart for going around breaking lovers' hearts.
In the third verse, the singer expresses his desire to find someone who's kind, with a heart as good and true as his. He acknowledges that he might be asking for too much and implores the departing lover to never break his heart. Overall, the lyrics of "Just Because" convey a sense of defiance, self-confidence, and an unwillingness to accept heartbreak.
