Summers graduated from Duncanville High School in 1957 and attended Arlington State College, now known as the University of Texas at Arlington. That same year, he formed the rockabilly band The Rebels and performed on Joe Bill's Country Picnic on KRLD, where they were spotted by songwriter Jed Tarver. This led to the band being signed by newly-found Jan Records. Their first record was released on February 1, 1958, under the name of Gene Summers & His Rebels.

Nervous
Gene Summers Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You make me nervous when you talk
You make me nervous can't you see
Baby what you're doing to me
You make me nervous with your smile
You make me nervous with your style
You make me nervous what can I do
[CHORUS]
Well, my heart starts to pounding when
I see you go by
I get tight inside and I just want to cry
I'm all fed up with your 'wait-awhile'
Listen to me baby 'cause you're driving me wild
[CHORUS]
In Gene Summers's song Nervous, the lyrics reflect the feeling of being infatuated with someone to the point of being almost overwhelmed by their presence. The repetition of "you make me nervous" highlights the intensity of the emotions being expressed, and the various ways the person's actions affect the singer add layers of depth to their infatuation. The lyrics suggest the singer is desperately seeking attention and affection from the person they are addressing, and their nervousness stems from a fear of rejection or being ignored.
The chorus of the song emphasizes the physical impact the person has on the singer, as their heart races and they feel a tightness inside. The line "I'm all fed up with your 'wait-awhile'" suggests the singer has been trying to pursue this person for some time, but feels like they are constantly being put on hold or brushed aside. The overall effect of the lyrics is to create a sense of urgency and longing, as the singer's emotions threaten to overwhelm them.
Overall, Gene Summers's song Nervous is a classic example of a rock 'n' roll love song. It captures the excitement and nervousness of falling for someone, while also expressing the fear and uncertainty that can come with putting yourself out there. The lyrics are simple yet effective, highlighting how powerful a crush or infatuation can be.
