Summers graduated from Duncanville High School in 1957 and attended Arlington State College, now known as the University of Texas at Arlington. That same year, he formed the rockabilly band The Rebels and performed on Joe Bill's Country Picnic on KRLD, where they were spotted by songwriter Jed Tarver. This led to the band being signed by newly-found Jan Records. Their first record was released on February 1, 1958, under the name of Gene Summers & His Rebels.

The Clown
Gene Summers Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
With a broken heart
A lonely boy
Playing a part
Others may love
And be loved in return
But a clown's love
Is never returned
Tears in my eyes
When no one can see
A smile on my lips
When you are near me
No one will know
It's only a part
I keep on playing
With a broken heart
CHORUS:
I thought that you could love me
That I had found the one
But who can love a fool
Yeah, who...who can love a clown
Tears in my eyes
When no one can see
A smile on my lips
When you are near me
No one will know
It's only a part
I keep on playing
With a broken heart
I keep on playing
With a broken heart..I keep on playing...(FADE)
The song "The Clown" by Gene Summers is a heartbreaking ballad that expresses the feelings of a rejected lover. The lyrics paint the picture of a man who is consumed by loneliness and despair, and who uses humor and performance as a way to disguise his inner pain. The first stanza, "I'm just a clown/With a broken heart/A lonely boy/Playing a part," immediately sets the tone for the song and establishes the singer as someone who is struggling to come to terms with his unrequited love.
The second stanza, "Tears in my eyes/When no one can see/A smile on my lips/When you are near me," further emphasizes the singer's emotional turmoil, as he tries to hide his true feelings from the world. The final stanza, "I thought that you could love me/That I had found the one/But who can love a fool/Yeah, who...who can love a clown," brings the song to a crushing conclusion, with the singer acknowledging that his love will never be reciprocated because he is seen as nothing more than a jesting jester.
