Summers graduated from Duncanville High School in 1957 and attended Arlington State College, now known as the University of Texas at Arlington. That same year, he formed the rockabilly band The Rebels and performed on Joe Bill's Country Picnic on KRLD, where they were spotted by songwriter Jed Tarver. This led to the band being signed by newly-found Jan Records. Their first record was released on February 1, 1958, under the name of Gene Summers & His Rebels.

You said you cared
You said you'd shed
For me a million tears
You said you loved me
But darling do you
I hope you do
You said you'd be true
You said you'd never
Ever make, make-a me blue
You said you loved me
But darling do you
I hope you do
Mm you said you loved me
Ah you said you loved me
Mm said you loved me...
The lyrics to Gene Summers's song "You Said You Loved Me" are about questioning the authenticity of someone's love. The singer states that their partner has made promises such as loving and caring for them, and always being faithful and true. However, the singer is unsure if these promises are being kept and if their partner genuinely loves them.
The repetition of the phrase "You said you loved me" emphasizes the doubt in the singer's mind. Despite the doubts, the singer also expresses their desire for their partner's love to be true.
