Some of his classic recordings include "School of Rock 'n Roll", "Straight Skirt", "Nervous", "Gotta Lotta That", and "Twixteen". Summers was inducted into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame in 1997 and The Southern Legends Entertainment & Performing Arts Hall of Fame in 2005. He still performs worldwide and celebrated his 50th anniversary as a recording artist in 2008 with the release of Reminisce Cafe.
Summers graduated from Duncanville High School in 1957 and attended Arlington State College, now known as the University of Texas at Arlington. That same year, he formed the rockabilly band The Rebels and performed on Joe Bill's Country Picnic on KRLD, where they were spotted by songwriter Jed Tarver. This led to the band being signed by newly-found Jan Records. Their first record was released on February 1, 1958, under the name of Gene Summers & His Rebels.

Yo recuerdo que tenía como 6–7 años y mi hermana mayor escuchaba esta canción,en las tardes que yo llegaba de la escuela,llegaba y mi hermana estaba haciendo comida recogiendo la casa y siempre salía esta canción, mi hermana y yo “cantabamos” la canción con tantas ganas de ser escuchados,hoy día tengo 20 años y desgraciadamente mi hermana falleció hace un año y medio aproximadamente,5 días después de su muerte que volví al trabajo,escuché esta canción seguida “Linger” y no abundaba más sentimiento en mi más que querer morir,mi hermana mayor era la que me llevaba a todos lados la que me malcriaba y la que me regañaba cuando era necesario.
Amén a sus familias lo más que puedan,díganles todos los días lo felices que los hacen,aunque haya días que se odien,perdonen.
Cuando falleció mi hermana estábamos peleados y la peor sensación es pedirle a tu familia perdón si que ellas te puedan aceptar las disculpas.

Mi hermana fue todo lo opuesto, escuchaba whats up, linger y hoy en día lloró a mi familia que sé separó por un divorcio de mis padres, mi hermana mayor sigue viva, llevamos años de no hablarnos, alejé a mis hijos de un ambiente tóxico y ellos tienen 20 y 22 y parece que lo lograron, pero a veces, solo a veces, una se rompe y le llora a la familia porque aunque ames a tus hermanos y padres a veces no es recíproco,y eso hace que uno se rompa de vez en cuando con , oda a la familia.
