Blues Stay Away From Me
Gene Vincent Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Blues stay away from me;
Blues why don`t you let me be.
Don`t know why you keep on haunting me?

Love was never meant for me;
True love was never meant for me.
Seems somehow we never can agree.
Life is full of misery;
Dreams are like a memory.
Bringing back your love that used to be.

Tears, so many I can`t see;

Years don`t mean a thing to me.
Time goes by and still I can`t be free.

Overall Meaning

The song “Blues Stay Away From Me” by Gene Vincent speaks of the singer’s struggle with the blues. The singer is clearly tired of the blues and wants them to stay away from him. He asks the blues to let him be, but he still can’t quite understand why they keep haunting him. The lyrics suggest that love was never meant for him, and he can't seem to ever agree with anyone about it.

The singer’s life is full of misery and dreams are the only things that feel like memories. He longs to bring back a love that used to exist but the only thing he can do is shed tears. His life has become so filled with grief that he is not able to see through the tears. It seems like years don’t mean anything to him; time goes by but he can’t seem to be free. The blues have consumed him so much that he believes he may never escape their grasp.

In summary, the singer wants the blues to stay away from him, but he can't truly comprehend why they keep haunting him. Love was never meant for him, and his life is full of misery, dreams, and tears. Time keeps going, but he can't seem to break free from the blues.

@Lee Etchells True, Gene & His Blue Caps recorded their version in 1956, the album came out in 1957. Cliff Gallup's signature guitar was a big part of their sound. The Johnny Burnette Trio also covered the song in 1956.
