After Be-Bop-A-Lula had become a huge hit in 1956 (peaking at #7 and spending 20 weeks in the Billboard Pop Chart), Gene Vincent & His Blue Caps (often mis-named as 'the' Blue Caps) were unable to follow it up with the same level of commercial success, but released critically acclaimed songs like Race With The Devil (#96 in Billboard) and Bluejean Bop (#49).
Following a visit to Europe in 1959, Vincent managed to attract a new huge and discerning audience there, especially in England and France. By that time his career had mostly ended in the US. In 1960, while on tour in Britain, Vincent and songwriter Sharon Sheeley were seriously injured in a high-speed traffic accident. Vincent broke his ribs, collarbone, and added further damage to his already weak leg which he had injured in a motorcycle accident in 1955 and refused to have amputated, and Sheeley suffered a broken pelvis. Both Vincent and Sheeley survived, but the accident killed Vincent's tourmate and Sheeley's fiancé, Eddie Cochran.
Vincent subsequently moved to England in 1963. His stage shows became "must see" events and his bands through those years were to spawn some of the most respected players in the world today. It was during his early tours of Britain that he adopted the trademark leather outfit, at the suggestion of British Rock 'n' Roll impressario, Jack Good.
Wear My Ring
Gene Vincent Lyrics

Wear my love within your heart
And say you'll always be
As much in love with me as at the start
Won't you wear my ring on your finger?
And make this solemn vow
That you'll will always be
And when we're old and we're gray
We will still have this day
To remember when December comes in May
Won't you wear my ring on your finger?
Provin' that love is ours to share
You're mine till evermore
Just like this ring of gold you now wear
And when we're old and we're gray
We will still have this day
To remember when December comes in May
Won't you wear my ring on your finger?
Provin' that love is ours to share
You're mine till evermore
Just like this ring of gold you now wear
The lyrics of Gene Vincent's "Wear My Ring" express a deep and enduring love that the singer wants his significant other to reciprocate. He pleads with his love to symbolize their commitment by wearing his ring on her finger and keeping his love within her heart. The request is not just a physical one, but a spiritual pledge that she will always remain in love with him as at the beginning. He emphasizes the importance of the vows they make, and how the memories they create will endure even when they grow old and gray. The same ring of gold will then signify their unwavering love and devotion towards each other that stands the test of time.
The song exudes a sense of hope, optimism, and a romanticized ideal of love that lasts forever. The lyrics are straightforward and speak to the heart, making it relatable to anyone who has ever been in love. The mournful melody and raw vocals of Gene Vincent add to the sincere and honest emotion expressed in the lyrics.
