I do it for you
Generation B.O. Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I remember other days, how I used to weep
Over things you said to me, I couldn't even sleep
You forgot your promises every single vow
All you did was laugh at me but things are different now

I cried for you
Now it's your turn to cry over me
Every road has a turning
That's one thing you're learning

I cried for you
What a fool I used to be
Now I found two eyes just a little bit bluer
I found a heart just a little bit truer

I cried for you
Now it's your turn to cry over me

How can I forget the hours that I worried through
Wondering the live-long day just what next thing to do
In those days you never thought anything of me
But the slave that was all yours and now at last is free

I cried for you
Now it's your turn to cry over me
Every road has a turning
That's one thing you're learning

I cried for you
What a fool I used to be
Now I found two eyes just a little bit bluer
I found a heart just a little bit truer

I cried for you
Now it's your turn to cry over me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "I Do It for You" by Generation B.O. are about being in a one-sided, toxic relationship and finally realizing the worth and the strength to walk away. The singer remembers the days when they used to cry over the hurtful words and broken promises of their partner, wondering what to do next and unable to sleep because of their partner's actions. However, things are different now, as the singer has found the courage to break free and move on. They have discovered someone who loves and appreciates them for who they are, and they are no longer the slave to their partner's whims and desires.

The chorus of the song repeats the line "I cried for you, now it's your turn to cry over me," emphasizing the turn of events and the singer's newfound confidence. The lyrics suggest that even though it may hurt to leave a relationship, it is ultimately worth it when you find happiness and love elsewhere. The song's message is empowering and reminds listeners to value themselves enough to walk away from any situation that does not serve them.

I love how when he says "if you can live your life without an audience...", it cuts to a shot of the entire audience looking at YOU, as if you were the performer of your life.

Legitimately chilling

I did a bit of research on the word 'meritocracy' because I never heard it before. I found it is ridiculous how much we were programmed to believe everything we say or do is important. Meritocracy basically means 'people get 100% rewarded for hard work' which is completely false. I thought about my own life, and there's a million things about my life that make me lucky when I dig deep. Being born in this generation of technology, having a family that supports me even if I disagree with them occasionally, having a normal school life even if I disagree with many aspects of the system, having food etc.
That's not to say that my own hard work doesn't matter, but it does mean lots of what I have in life isn't due to hard work and never will be. Creators get stunted to give more to their audiences solely for the sake of it, which is what Bo highlights here. Uploading to the internet, whether it be commenting or making content, has become less about saying something meaningful and more about saying 'something', whether or not that something actually has any value at the end of the day. Hard work alone ignores the considerations of what we're actually putting out there and how it resonates with people (if at all, which is another factor due to luck) and how it even fits in with our needs.

The message is not to totally stop social media, but to stop our need for pointless attention that stems from social media. It all stems from our self-importance that we believe we earned where we haven't actually earned it.
