The Ram Jam Band were formed around 1964 and evolved out of a group called Les Blues who were formed to rival a English group with a Black American singer called Milton And The Continentals. Before taking on Geno Washington, they had been backing a British Blues singer by the name of Errol Dixon. Their first single featuring Dixon, "Shake, Shake, Senora" / "Akinla" released on Columbia had sunk without a trace.
Geno Washington was a U.S. airman stationed in East Anglia who became well known for his impromptu performances in London nightclubs. In 1965, guitarist Pete Gage needed a singer front his new band and replace the previous singer Errol Dixon, and asked Washington to join and the latter was discharged from the U.S. Air force, he became the band's frontman.
The band broke up in the autumn of 1969 and the band members went their own ways while Geno Washington continued as a solo artist before returning to the United States.

For taking the easy way out
Got a good reason
For taking the easy way out now
She was a day tripper
One way ticket, yeah
It took me so long to find out
And I found out
She's a big teaser
She took me half the way there
She's a big teaser
She took me half the way there, now
She was a day tripper
One way ticket, yeah
It took me so long to find out
And I found out
Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah
Tried to please her
She only played one night stand
Tried to please her
She only played one night stand, now
She was a day tripper
Sunday driver, yeah
It took me so long to find out
And I found out
Day tripper, day tripper, yeah
Day tripper, day tripper, yeah
Day tripper, day tripper, yeah
The song "Day Tripper" by Geno Washington & The Ram Jam Band is about a woman who is a "day tripper" - someone who takes the easy way out in relationships and only wants one night stands. The singer acknowledges that he too had a good reason for taking the easy way out and not pursuing a deeper relationship with her. He describes her as a big teaser who only took him halfway there and played him for a fool. She was only interested in a casual fling, and even though he tried to please her, he realized it was a dead end.
The lyrics are a cautionary tale about casual relationships and the dangers of getting involved with someone who only wants a quick thrill. The singer warns listeners not to fall into the same trap he did and to look for more meaningful connections. The energetic and upbeat music of the song contrasts with the darker lyrics, highlighting the euphemism that casual relationships are often portrayed with.
Overall, "Day Tripper" is a classic rock song that remains popular to this day, with its catchy tune and lyrics that speak to the complexities of modern relationships. It's a reminder that sometimes the easy way out is not always the best way, and that we should always choose meaningful and lasting connections over quick thrills.
