I have only heard one version of this that is really "dark." It's the JEROME HINES version Klemperer. I'd love to find it. HINES has some trouble with the higher part, but he NAILS the low notes. Usually this is done by a bass-baritone. HINES is perfection.

I heard Marian Nowakowski sing this in 1955 and he dominated the entire performance of The Messiah. This bass, whoever he is, is technically correct but not with the same character and subtilety of Nowakowski, esp in the lower register. But nicely done.
