The fourth movement Sarabande of George Frideric Handel's Keyboard suite in… Read Full Bio ↴The fourth movement Sarabande of George Frideric Handel's Keyboard suite in D minor (HWV 437) for solo harpsichord achieved modern popularity when an orchestrated version was used by Stanley Kubrick for his 1975 film Barry Lyndon. Later, Brian De Palma featured the same orchestration as the overture for his 2007 film Redacted. Also, in another direct reference to Barry Lyndon, Michael Winterbottom included this sarabande in A Cock and Bull Story in a new arrangement by Michael Nyman.

It also made an appearance on the 2008 HBO Series John Adams, about the life of the second president of the United States. It appeared in episode 4, when Adams (Paul Giamatti) meets King George III (played by Tom Hollander) while serving as Minister to Great Britain.

The Levi's campaign "Freedom to Move" used a different arrangement of the sarabande to accompany it's titular jeans' surreal commercial.

The Theme of Handel's Sarabande is a variation of La Folia, one of the oldest remembered European musical themes on record.

Everyone’s comments are so wonderful. I was a new entrant into classical music when I first saw Barry Lyndon. That film changed me. It opened me up toward the era depicted and the history of Prussia. Wonderful and tragic story.

+Steven Griffin It is shot masterfully, with meaning dripping off of the screen. I especially love how during the first shot of Barry, the camera zooms out to show his expansive horizons, and how the final shot zooms in to him entering a carriage, showing the claustrophobic nature of the impoverished life he will live.

People criticize the narrator and the acting. I can understand the narrator being seen as a lazy way to progress the plot of the film, but I personally find O'Neal's acting, along with everyone else, to be quite alright. A wonderful, sad, fantastic film in my opinion.

I once gave a paper on a Kubrick panel at a cinema studies conference and described O'Neal's acting as "bad." How I rue my stupidity. Even at the time what I was trying to express was how Kubrick pulled a stylized yet emotionally moving performance from O'Neal, perhaps making use of any shortcomings he may or may not have had as an actor.

In my heart, Stanley Kubrick has always been a mentor for film making. His method of creating a scene is like life its self. Each shot is like a painting. You have to stand back and view it. Then, go back again for a second look because you may have missed something. This is why I have watched 2001: A Space Odyssey - at least, 2001 times.

You're damned right about that! I regard "Barry Lyndon" to be the greatest film ever produced - and, yes, it's also the most beautiful as well. I've tried to get people to watch this film time and time again-but they don't get it. They don't have the attention span; they don't have the class, or the brains to sit through it. And all of them--every damn person I've tried to show this movie to--they talk all throughout the entire film--about random stuff. I try to keep a positive outlook about everything--I swear I do. But when it comes to things like this--how no one can appreciate a great work of art, a true masterpiece. It drives me crazy! We're all doomed!

I understand. I showed this films to students at the University of Arizona during my entire career and it's very difficult to navigate student attention spans, their focus on irrelevancies, and so on. But when a student really tuned into this and other films that was reward enough in itself.

I still wish he was able to make that Napoleon movie. If you haven't read the script, go read it; its on the web. That would have been awesome. Of course, if he would have made Napoleon, he probably wouldn't have made Barry Lyndon, so its all have dozen one or the other.
