Moonlight
George Barnett Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lay me in my woods, set me in my ways
Oh, the tide is turning, oh, the sky is burning down, down
Keep you in my thoughts, winter is in the trees
Mum, I feel so lonely, mum, my tears are only mine

I always feel like William in A Knight’s Tale
I always take the hardest path
Forget the drums and throw away the chain mail
Face the forest, all these scars, all these scars

Here we go again watching the moonlight conquer
Here we go again watching a thousand monsters
You say it never ends, asking for wasteland answers
You’re waiting for the friends, but they ring up and cancel

I was once like you

Overall Meaning

These lyrics are from George Barnett's song Moonlight, which is an introspective and reflective piece about feeling lost, alone, and disoriented. The first verse speaks about being "set in my ways" and feeling like an outsider while witnessing the world changing around the singer. The second verse sees the singer drawing a parallel between their experiences and William, the singer of A Knight's Tale, who climbed his way up the social ladder to be a knight, despite the odds against him. The singer here is tired of the traditional way of doing things, and wants to carve their path their way. The chorus returns to the idea of watching the moonlight conquer, referencing the passage of time and the inevitability of change.

In the third verse, the singer talks to someone who is waiting for their friends, but they keep cancelling. The singer empathizes with this feeling, saying that "I was once like you," implying that they have perhaps moved past this disappointment and are now more content on their own. The song as a whole seems to be about the process of finding oneself and accepting that changes and hardships are an inherent part of it. The imagery of the woods and the moonlight give a sense of solitude and mystery throughout the song.

I used to listen to this piece on repeat when I was 14, and write poems about the forest

Tamara Batty

It's so sad that he took all these videos off his channel! Great music.

paris was here

Tamara Batty I know!! His old music got me through so much! Any ideas as to why he took them down? I've asked him numerous times but never seemed to get a response, which is understandable. The only reason I can think of is him wanting to reinvent himself? ¯\(ツ)/¯ But I'm still so sad! 😭😭😭

It's probably got something to do with his rebranding! He went from George Barnett to AKA George and got rid of all the music associated with George Barnett.
