Lately
George Benson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lately, I have had the strangest feeling
With no vivid reason here to find
Yet the thought of losing you's been hanging 'round my mind
Far more frequently you're wearing perfume
With you say no special place to go
But when I ask will you be coming back soon
You don't know, never know
Well, I'm a man of many wishes
Hope my premonition misses
But what I really feel my eyes won't let me hide
'Cause they always start to cry
'Cause this time could mean goodbye
Lately I've been staring in the mirror
Very slowly picking me apart
Trying to tell myself I have no reason with your heart
Just the other night while you were sleeping
I vaguely heard you whisper someone's name
But when I ask you of the thoughts your keeping
You just say nothing's changed
Well, I'm a man of many wishes
I hope my premonition misses
But what I really feel my eyes won't let me hide
'Cause they always start to cry
'Cause this time could mean goodbye, goodbye
Oh, I'm a man of many wishes
I hope my premonition misses
But what I really feel my eyes won't let me hide

'Cause they always start to cry
'Cause this time could mean goodbye

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of George Benson's song Lately are about a man who is having a strange feeling that something isn't right in his relationship. He is worried that he may lose his partner and this thought is occupying his mind more frequently. He has noticed that his partner has been wearing perfume more often than usual and when he asks if she will be coming back soon, she doesn't give a sure answer. The man is trying to tell himself that he has no reason to be worried about losing his partner, but he can't deny the feelings that are starting to well up inside of him.

The second verse of the song is about the man searching for signs of what might be going wrong in his relationship. He is staring in the mirror, trying to pick apart his own faults and reassure himself that he is not the reason why his partner might be pulling away. During one night when she is sleeping, he hears her whisper someone's name, but when he confronts her about it, she says that nothing has changed. The song ends with the man admitting that he is a man of many wishes, and although he hopes his premonition is wrong, he can't hide the fact that he is starting to cry because he believes that this time could mean goodbye.

One interpretation of the song is that it is about the fear of losing someone you love. The man is plagued with doubts and fears that his partner might be slipping away and he is haunted by the thought of being alone. Another interpretation is that the song is about the difficulty of communication in relationships. The woman is unwilling or unable to communicate her true feelings to the man, leaving him feeling confused and uncertain about the future of their relationship.

This performance  is out of this world. So sweet, so clean, so pure, so intense. It's fantastic.

What a guitarist he is..every note clean and has a point..there has never been anyone better. A once in a lifetime player for us all to enjoy. He has plenty of music out there that i never get tired of listening to. Just an outright gift from God. You can never run of superlatives describing this gifted man, thanks so much George i started playing years ago listening to your recordings it so inspired me and im sure countless other guitarist have taken inspiration as well. Pure mastery personified......thanks.

@GizmetDora Lopez Agreed.

@Bo Reed You're absolutely right! And to think God gave him a double blessing --- one of the most gorgeous tenor voice of recent times! I am not a general lover of the guitar, but GB has several guitar renditions I absolutely love, consequently I pretty much have all of his music --- vocal and instrumental, and two DVDs [concerts] as well.

I heard George with Earl Klugh,at the Jazz Workshop in '74,in Boston. I was 10 feet off the ground for a week. Just a giant in the room.

A guitar virtuoso being backed being backed by no less a piano legend than Joe Sample in the performance of a song written by yet another legend can only deliver sheer and sublime listening pleasure.
