In 2004, George Canyon competed in Nashville Star 2. He placed 2nd in the competition, but became very well known in Canada and garnered much support, being the only Canadian to make the cut for the competition. Since the competition has ended, he has received many accolades from fans and the industry alike. These include a number 1 hit about a still-born baby called "My Name," a Juno Award for Best Country Recording of the Year (for his album One Good Friend), and, most recently four Canadian Country Music Awards (CCMAs) including Male Vocalist of the Year and the Fan Choice Award.
Canyon is known for his support of SHARE (Share Pregnancy and Infant Loss Support, Inc. serves those whose lives are touched by the tragic death of a baby through early pregnancy loss, stillbirth, or in the first few months of life) and Animas Canada (company who makes insulin pumps, which George himself uses). His song "My Name" is reflective of why he has associated himself with SHARE.
George says:
"I co-wrote this song with Gordie Sampson from the perspective of an unborn baby. A close friend and his wife had a miscarriage, and I witnessed the pain they went through losing a baby. I wanted to write a song to help people cope with that trauma and somehow bring a positive light to the subject"

Good Day To Ride
George Canyon Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I pour coffee in my cup
And I look out on the fields
Of the land that I call home
And if there's no chance of rain
And I need to get away
I'll grab a saddle
And be long, long gone
Chorus:
Looks like a good day to ride
Underneath this big warm sun
Looks like a good day
To let this old boy fly
Loose on the reins and on the run
To a blue and endless sky
Looks like a good day to ride
There's a world that's in a race
For some money and some fame
But out here there's nothin'
All I need is what I have
So when I want to free my mind
From the concrete in the sides
I head for the mountains
Back to who I am
Whoaoaoa
Looks like a good day to ride, yeah
The lyrics of George Canyon's "Good Day To Ride" is a tribute to the beauty of the rural countryside and the freedom that comes with being able to escape from the daily routine whenever the urge strikes. The song reflects the singer's love for the simple pleasures of life, which are often overlooked in the rush of modern life. The chorus, which repeats three times in the song, emphasizes the joy of escaping to the open road and the endless blue sky. When the singer wakes up in the morning, he pours himself a cup of coffee and takes in the beautiful sight of the fields of the land he calls home. He sees that the weather is perfect for a ride and decides to let the horse run free.
The lyrics suggest that the world is obsessed with gaining wealth and fame, but the singer prefers to lead a simple life. The song expresses the belief that it is essential to take time to appreciate and be grateful for what one has, rather than chasing after material possessions. The second verse emphasizes this idea by describing how the singer needs to escape from the concrete jungle and go back to the mountains, where he finds peace and the true nature of himself.
Overall, "Good Day To Ride" is an ode to the open road and the beauty of nature. It celebrates the freedom that comes with being able to escape the city and find oneself in the serenity of the countryside.

As soon as I wake up each day
I pour coffee in my cup
I fill up my cup with coffee

That's part of my home
And if there's no chance of rain
If it won't rain today
And I need to get away
and I need to leave this place for a while
I'll grab a saddle
I'll take a saddle for a ride
