I was raised in SW Louisiana. My elementary/junior high school was as white as white gets. But this was the early 70's so they bussed in 2 dudes from across the tracks. Those cats showed us whiteboys and girls what funk was! Parliament Funkadelic!

It’s funny how, when you’re a kid first listening to this song, you have zero idea of what the song is talking about, or why it’s called Flaslight for that matter, and it isn’t until later when you become an adult that you slowly start to realize that the song is about an individual who doesn’t want to dance because they’re “too cool” to be open and true to their real selves. Someone whose light is dim, but is still there, somewhere. The flashlight is basically a metaphor for helping someone out of the darkness, and into the light. Or in this case, helping someone finding the funk and just letting loose; not caring what others think about them.

I remember that this song got airplay on rock stations and my friends and I went nuts when we heard it and we were listening to Led Zeppelin and Yes and Kansas. About five or six of us ended up going to Madison Square Garden to see them in concert and it was great; it was basically a party with twenty thousand people and when that spaceship lowered onto the stage with Bootsy, the place went nuts.
