When gold turns to rust it ain't me you love
When it's time for curtain call when the writing's on the wall
When talk turns to touch it ain't me you love it ain't me you love
It ain't me you long to hold tight it ain't me come on look me in the eye
You play the part so well but it ain't tough to tell what's plain to see it ain't me
When the lay is on the line and it's life Number 9
When the dust finally clears you're just the smoke on mirrors
And that don't leave much it ain't me you love it ain't me you love
It ain't me you long to hold tight...
( guitar )
It ain't me you long to hold tight...
Oh it's plain to see it ain't me
The lyrics to George Ducas's song "It Ain't Me" describe a relationship that was doomed from the start. The singer is clear that they know they are not the person the other individual in the relationship loves. The first stanza sets the tone by stating that "when it ain't in the cards when it's over from the start" and "when gold turns to rust, it ain't me you love." This implies that from the beginning of the relationship, there were issues that made it impossible for it to work. The second stanza further elaborates on this idea, stating that "when the lay is on the line and it's life Number 9, when your mind's all made up, it ain't me you love." This line refers to a situation where someone is putting everything they have on the line, and even then, the other person doesn't truly love them.
The chorus states clearly that "it ain't me you long to hold tight." The lyrics are an emotional plea, asking the other person to look them in the eye and recognize the truth: they are not the one they truly love. The singer states that "you play the part so well, but it ain't tough to tell what's plain to see, it ain't me." In this line, it becomes apparent that the other person has been pretending to love the singer, but it is easy to see that they don't.
Overall, "It Ain't Me" is a song about a relationship that never had a chance, where one person was never truly loved. The lyrics capture the intense emotions of the singer as they plead with the other person to recognize their feelings.
