Also, the reason the world doesn't rally towards wiping us out is because we are the lesser evil followed by nuclear weapons. Also actions like this is a breeding pit for worse actions and a decline in moral as not everyone is going to be fine with that... grenades in bunks existed for various reasons including that. And sometimes it's better to be a martyr against tyranny and unjust actions... even if it cost you your freedom, future, and/or life. Compare that to the scene in the German movie "Stalingrad (1993)."
Prisoners from a penal batallion are asked to volunteer to fight off the enemy attack. If succesful, they will be fully reinstated.
As the prisoners agree, the Captain who briefed them, calls to one man "Otto."

Turns out both were officers when the war started, one was promoted to Captain, the other was disgraced, demoted and sent to serve in a penal batallion exploding mines. But the disgraced one, Otto, still has the same personal power over the other, who made Captain.

There is no "good side of war". To me, it represents the conscience inside the soldiers themselves. When Dafao got killed, it was a huge turning point. A tyrant (Barnes) would now be in complete control with no oversight and no level head to keep him in check. Dafoe dying was the proclamation that all morality was gone and the line between good and evil would be blurred going forward.

There are bad people in war(Barnes), there are good/"better" people in war(Elias), and then there are those who are there because they were just ordered to be there by their country(the rest of the platoon), and by the end of the movie, Elias gets killed indirectly by Barnes, which symbolizes that no matter how good you are, eventually, the bad will get to you, and either force you to turn bad or your goodness will likely end up getting you killed. After that, Barnes is confronted by Charlie Sheen(forgot the character's name), and he cuts him across the face, representing the scarring of innocence, and past that, Charlie Sheen is almost killed by Barnes towards the end of the final battle we see in the movie, and when Charlie Sheen survives(as well as being one of the very last survivors of his platoon), he picks up a rifle and finishes off Barnes, representing the everyman losing his innocence and any internal "goodness" he may have at war. Finally, Charlie Sheen gets to go home, and this means that by the end of war, there will be no more good and no more bad, nobody wins and nobody loses, except ther will be survivors who harbor a scarred soul and lost innocence.

It was interesting that when Barnes was brutalizing the villagers that none of the soldiers around him had the guts to stand up to him. You could see it some of their eyes that they were horrified at what was happening right before their eyes. They knew that it was going to escalate, yet none of them, not even the lieutenant had the courage to stop Barnes. Truth be told, most people are like that. Just a different version of "don't get involved" for fear of Barnes turning on you. At the same time, Barnes has his allies who you could see from their faces that they were in his corner on this one. (Not that that emboldened him in any way. He would have done the exact same thing even if 100 percent of the other troops had expressed feelings of revulsion. Nope, Barnes was not about to stop.)

The along comes Elias. He storms over the rise from out of the scene and he doesn't even have to think. You can see it in his eyes. He marches in there full tilt with a full sense of purpose of ending this madness. Right away, the audience has found its hero. He's not afraid of Barnes and he WILL put a stop to this madeness. Watched it back in 1999. We had just graduated from high school, and us two girls were binge watching movies from The Last of the Mohicans to Independence Day, to Platoon. Each belonged to a different genre but all masterpieces, nontheless. I should think Platoon made me rethink of the hardship my Dad must've undergone while he was in the army. Great decision to cast Berenger and Dafoe opposite of the good guy/bad guy roles they were getting before. Casting against type and shaking it up sometimes gets great results (like casting Kurtwood Smith as the villain in Robocop). It also can fall apart, but if the actor/director can pull it off you've got some real winning work -- in this case both actors were nominated for Best Supporting Actor (and lost to Michael Caine).

The unstated psychology behind Sgt Barnes is fascinating (and he is based on a real soldier who served alongside Oliver Stone in Vietnam). Here is a handsome Southern guy who probably got drafted with the idealistic hopes of coming home a war hero, probably like his own father who may have served in WWII. Instead he gets his face blown off, his good looks have permanently transformed into a horrifically scarred mask of terror. And slowly he has started to embody the cruelty of war which he sees in the mirror. Barnes has lost all of his humanity and his connection to the "civilized" world is permanently broken, now he's simply a spectre of death stalking the jungle looking to take revenge on his enemy

I saw this film with my mom and older brother when I was younger. I actually saw it in the movies and it was an experience that I never forgot even now. I watched Rambo movies and Missing In Action movies that were just action movies with a war backdrop but this movie felt like I was watching a documentary about the Vietnam War on the big screen. This scene is actually the turning point in the movie. It's not about showing what a monster Barnes is, because soon after it's revealed that the entire village was in fact VC. Barnes knew it but couldn't prove it, and was willing to do whatever was necessary. Elias intervened and ultimately signed his own death warrant. On the flip side, Elias knew that Barnes was in the wrong, and was doing what he believed was right. The clash of these characters causes the civil war in the platoon. There was no right or wrong in this scene, because as Taylor states, "Hell is the impossibility of reason."

It’s stock, and he used the “butt” of the stock to hit Barnes....it’s what we call in the Army a buttstroke. He might as well have hit Barnes with a wiffle ball bat since that CAR-15 stock is all it’s good for. You want to cause some brain damage or death, use a good old fashioned wood stock like on an M1 Garand or M-14.

This movie made me feel so many emotions. Biggest one was hatred for Barnes though, that guy was an absolute psycho, and his actor pulled it off beautifully.
