December Song
George Michael Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas
May your every New Year dream come true

Sweet December song
The melody that saved me
On those less than Silent Nights
When snow would fall upon my bed
Like sugar from Jesus
And take me to the day
She could always smile
The Virgin Child would always show you see
Just to save me (just to save me)
There was always Christmas time
To wipe the year away
I guess that Mum and Dad decided
That the war would have to wait

There was always Christmas time
Jesus came to stay
I could believe in peace on Earth
And I could watch TV all day
So I dreamed of Christmas

Maybe since you've gone
I went a little crazy
God knows they can see the child

But the snow that falls upon my bed
That loving I needed
Falls every single day
For each and every child
The Virgin smiles for all to see
But you kept her from me

There was always Christmas time
To wipe the year away
I guess that Mum and Dad decided
That the war would have to wait

There was always Christmas time
Jesus came to stay
I could believe in peace on Earth
And I could watch TV all day
So I dreamed of Christmas
Yes, I dreamed like you

Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas
May your every New Year dream come true

Overall Meaning

The song "Last Christmas" might be George Michael's most famous Christmas song, but "December Song" is an emotional ballad that stands on its own. The song is a heartfelt tribute to the healing and comforting power of the holiday season, as Michael reflects on a childhood marked by war, loss, and loneliness. The opening lines express the classic sentiment of holiday greetings, wishing happiness and fulfillment to the listener. As the song progresses, Michael recalls the warmth and security he felt as a child listening to Christmas music during the long, cold nights of December.

The mention of snow falling on Michael’s bed "like sugar from Jesus" is a particularly striking image that evokes the sensation of something pure and magical entering a dark and troubled space. The song then shifts to a more somber tone, as Michael acknowledges the ways in which war and conflict disrupt the innocence and joy of childhood experiences. The Virgin Child, a common symbol of hope and salvation in Christian art, is presented as a source of comfort and grace who can "save" the singer from the pain of the world. Michael also references his own loss and grief, imagining snow falling on his bed to represent the "loving" he needed after experiencing a great loss.

The song ultimately returns to its optimistic and hopeful tone, affirming the power of Christmas to lift spirits, bring people together, and inspire dreams of a better world. Michael also pays tribute to those who make the holiday possible, including parents who put aside their own struggles to create a special time for their children. "December Song" is a poignant reflection on the emotional complexities of the holiday season, and a reminder of the ways in which the traditions and rituals of Christmas can hold deep meaning and importance in our lives.

I heard someone mention it on the radio and looked it up. I've never heard this song in my life - but even if I had, it seems utterly unmemorable. It's like the George Michael equivalent of someone mumbling a tune to themself.
I really don't think it's, "the best Christmas song of the Century" - that might be a slight overstatement.

@@lewis7515do you know the meaning of the song? It conveys a universal message of hope, love, and longing during the holiday season. It reminds listeners that, behind the festive facade, many people experience a mix of emotions during this time and long for genuine connections.
People dont listen to meaning of songs and like hear cheerful songs during the the season. Thats why it has not got much air play on radio.

I find the lyrics very moving and original. Never heard it before. George Michael's voice is fab as usual.

A poignant and truly beautiful song. Love that our dear GM named it after December rather than Christmas, as that points to it being more about the mood of this season, the sadness that many can feel during this season, rather than really being about the holiday itself. In other words: brilliant. #RIPGMFOREVER
