Praying For Time
George Michael Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

These are the days of the open hand
They will not be the last
Look around now
These are the days of the beggars and the choosers

This is the year of the hungry man
Whose place is in the past
Hand in hand with ignorance
And legitimate excuses

The rich declare themselves poor
And most of us are not sure
If we have too much
But we'll take our chances
'Cause God's stopped keeping score

I guess somewhere along the way
He must have let us all out to play
Turned his back and all God's children
Crept out the back door

And it's hard to love, there's so much to hate
Hanging on to hope
When there is no hope to speak of
And the wounded skies above say it's much, much too late
Well, maybe we should all be praying for time

These are the days of the empty hand
Oh, you hold on to what you can
And charity is a coat you wear twice a year

This is the year of the guilty man
Your television takes a stand
And you find that what was over there is over here

So you scream from behind your door
Say, "What's mine is mine and not yours"
I may have too much but I'll take my chances
'Cause God's stopped keeping score

And you cling to the things they sold you
Did you cover your eyes when they told you
That he can't come back
'Cause he has no children to come back for

It's hard to love, there's so much to hate
Hanging on to hope when there is no hope to speak of

And the wounded skies above say it's much too late
So maybe we should all be praying for time

Overall Meaning

In "Praying for Time," George Michael explores the societal problems that were prevalent in the early 90s, such as poverty, greed, and desperation. The first few lines describe the current state of the world as one in which people are both giving and taking, as evidenced by the presence of both beggars and choosers. Michael then goes on to describe the state of hunger and poverty that many people are experiencing, juxtaposed with the willful ignorance and empty excuses of the wealthy. He speaks to the fact that many people can no longer discern whether they have too much or too little, and that society has become almost like a game, with people taking their chances and God no longer keeping score.

Long live King George Michael.
All my life he's been producing and performing top notch music, on that special plane, that only a few artists ever reach.
I'd love to have met him, for a moment or two.
What a guy.

I'm pretty sure there are some peoples who did meet him, and have cherished stories.
He just seems like a nice bloke, with incredible talent.
FOUR decades of chart topping music.
Millions of discs sold.
I dunno about his live career.
But what a life....
Missed by many.

I won a trip to see him in concert in Chicago
(I'm in Denver) in my early 20's in 1987. He has always been my favorite artist and I became an authentic Christian much later in life.

Revelation 14:13
(Jesus speaking from the Throne in Heaven)
“And I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Write this down: Blessed are those who die in the Lord from now on. Yes, says the Spirit, they are blessed indeed, for they will rest from their hard work; for their good deeds follow them!””
‭‭Revelation‬ ‭14:13‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Wow! So powerful and truly amazing!
God's Word is light and life to those who read it and abide by it.

Revelation 14:13 proclaims that once you give your life to Jesus, and have died and gone to heaven, your "deeds" will follow you -!!!
George Michael gave so much money 💰 millions and millions to cancer charity's , children's charity's and many others. He always chose to remain an anonymous giver. His reward is now in heaven.
I prayed for George for years to give his life to Christ and repent of his sin.

God bless you George
I love you forever ❤️

What a genius this man was. This song was released almost 25 years ago. Yet the lyrics are playing out in real time today. Men and women are lovers of themselves. “The rich declare themselves poor, and most of us aren’t sure if we have too much. But, we’ll take the chance cause Gods stopped keeping score”. You cling to the things that they sold you, did you cover your eyes when they told you that he can’t comeback, cause he has no children to come back for”. Such relevant lyrics. We have turned our backs on God and we have no one to thank but ourselves. George was right. Maybe we should all be praying for time. George’s time was cut short and he was taken too soon. Don’t make the same mistake. Thanks for the music, George. You are sorely missed.
