Somebody To Love
George Michael Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Each morning I get up I die a little
Can barely stand on my feet (take a look at yourself)
Take a look in the mirror and cry
Lord, what you're doing to me
I have spent all my years in believing you
But I just can't get no relief, Lord
Somebody uh (somebody) somebody (somebody)
Can anybody find me somebody to love?

I work (he works hard) hard every day of my life
I work 'til I ache my bones
At the end (at the end of the day) I take home my hard earned pay all on my own
I go down on my knees
And I start to pray (praise the Lord)
'Til the tears run down from my eyes
Lord, somebody uh (somebody) somebody (somebody)
Can anybody find me somebody to love?

(He works hard) everyday (everyday)
I try and I try and I try
But everybody wants to put me down
They say I'm goin' crazy
They say I got a lot of water in my brain
I got no common sense
I got nobody left to believe
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Oh, Lord
Somebody uh (somebody) somebody (somebody)
Can anybody find me somebody to love?

(Can anybody find me somebody to love?)
Got no feel, I got no rhythm
I just keep losing my beat
I'm alright, I'm alright (he's alright)
I ain't gonna face no defeat
I just gotta get out of this prison cell
Someday I'm gonna be free, Lord

Find me somebody to love
Find me somebody to love
Find me somebody to love
Find me somebody to love
Find me somebody to love
Find me somebody to love
Find me somebody to love
Find me somebody to love
Find me somebody to love
Somebody (somebody) somebody (somebody)
Somebody find me, somebody find me somebody to love
Can anybody find me
Somebody to come on, love, yeah

Find me somebody to love
Find me somebody to love
Find me somebody, somebody, somebody to love (find me somebody to love)
Find me, find me, find me, find me uh somebody to love
Find me somebody to love

Find me somebody to love (anybody, anywhere)
Somebody, somebody to love yeah yeah oh (find me somebody to love)

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of the song, “Each morning I get up I die a little, can barely stand on my feet” immediately creates a melancholic mood. The lyrics are reminiscent of someone who is struggling to remain hopeful and positive in life. The chorus line, “Can anybody find me somebody to love?” becomes a plea from the singer to fill the void in his life. The song speaks to the innate human need to be loved, and to feel worthy of affection. The driving beat of the verses electrifies into a frenzy, as George Michael grunts “he works hard”, driving home the singer’s continued efforts at trying, but failing to find love.

The second verse encapsulates the singer’s struggle in life, and his continued prayers for deliverance. “At the end of the day I take home my hard earned pay all on my own, I go down on my knees and I start to pray”. The repetition of “somebody” in the chorus line is almost like a mantra, with each repetition becoming more desperate than the last. The bridge of the song delivers a message of hope. “I’m alright, I’m alright, I ain’t gonna face no defeat,” with the singer declaring that he will keep fighting and never give up on his quest for love. The song delivers the message that love, in whatever form, is the ultimate goal in life, and the lack of it can make one feel helpless and hopeless.

I think we need a tribute concert for George Michael.

@JG_SmileSOBright

Agreed!!! Maxwell would be a great choice!

@maryg4575

God, yes!

@PFCD

Sadly I don't think we'll ever get one because with the exception of a handful of singers they would butcher his songs because he had such a phenomenal voice. Adam Lambert and Rob Lamberti would pretty much have to do the whole tribute concert. That would be okay with me though!

@kevinfletcher5872

I gotta be honest...I'd love to see one, but who? Adam Lambert is a tribute to Fred as well as being great in his own right, George?? I'll give it some thought.

@PFCD

@greg acosta Did you ever hear George Michael tell the story how Michael Jackson disrespected him? He went to Neverland as Michael insisted George go there and they were going to discuss doing a single. He said after Michael made him STAND in the foyer for half an hour then Michael was sitting across from him on couches and Michael would not talk to him directly. He would talk to his manager and tell him to talk to Rob kahane to then talk to George. George said this guy is straight-up crazy, no amount of money is worth being disrespected in this way and I want nothing to do with him. It was either 87 or 88 George sold more records than Michael. I agree with your jealousy assessment. George could easily sing R&B pop and dance music, wrote his own songs and played on them and could dance. Strikingly gorgeous he was....defined as normal. Definitely things Michael Jackson wouldn't like.
