To Be Forgiven
George Michael Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm going down
Won't you help me
Save me from myself
I hear the sound of the memory
Maybe time will tell

Suddenly my life is like a river
Taking me places I don't want to go
But like all good men who swim too well
It takes all that I have just to cry for help
Then that voice in my head tells me no

I'm going down
Won't you help me
Save me from myself
I hear the sound of the memory
Maybe, who can tell ?

Let me live my life beside the river
Take me to places where a child can grow
And then maybe the boy inside will forsake me
Maybe the child in me will just let me go

I'm going down
The cold, cold water is rushing in
I'm going down
And I would beg to be forgiven

If I knew my sin

Overall Meaning

is just being alive

The lyrics of George Michael's song "To Be Forgiven" are a raw expression of the singer's inner struggles. The opening lines, "I'm going down, won't you help me, save me from myself" convey a sense of desperation and a plea for help. The following line, "I hear the sound of the memory, maybe time will tell," suggests that the singer is haunted by past mistakes or memories that he cannot escape from. The second verse speaks of the metaphorical river of life that is taking the singer to places he doesn't want to go. The line "But like all good men who swim too well, it takes all that I have just to cry for help" suggests that the singer is adept at coping with difficult situations, but even he has reached his limit. The voice in his head telling him "no" may represent his own inner critic, or a sense of fatalism that is holding him back.

The chorus repeats the opening lines, with the addition of "Maybe, who can tell?" which suggests a sense of uncertainty about whether help will come or if the singer is doomed to continue sinking. The third verse is a plea for the freedom to live a simple life and to let go of the burdens that are weighing the singer down. The line "And then maybe the boy inside will forsake me, maybe the child in me will just let me go" suggests that the singer is burdened by a sense of responsibility or duty, and longs to rediscover the simple joys of childhood.

Overall, "To Be Forgiven" is a deeply personal and introspective song that deals with themes of struggle, redemption, and the search for inner peace.

In my opinion, Older is George's best album. And for me, this is one of the best albums in the history of music. Masterpiece!

I absolutely agree. For me it's a toss up between GEORGE MICHAEL - OLDER (1996) and SADE - LOVE DELUXE (1992). For me these are the two best albums ever made. This is 2020 almost 25yrs later and there has been nothing to come close to either of the above.
