Papa Was A Rolling Stone
George Michael and Queen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It was the third of september
That day I'll always remember, yes I will
'Cause that was the day that my daddy died

Never had a chance to see him, no
Never heard nothing but bad things about him
Mama, I'm depending on you to tell me the truth
Mama just hung her head and said

[chorus]
"papa was a rollin' stone
Wherever he laid his hat was his home
And when he died
All he left us was alone"
[repeat]

Hey, mama, is it true what they say
That papa never worked aday in his life
Some bad talk going around sayin'
Papa had three outside children
And another wife
That ain't right

Heard some talk about papa and his storefront
Preachin'
Talkin' about saving souls and all the time
Leachin'
And dealing in dirt
Stealin' in the name of the Lord

But mama she just said
[chorus]
Say I heard my papa was a jack of all trades
Is that what papa sent to an early grave?
Folks say papa would beg, borrow or steal just
To pay his bills
Hey, mama, folks say papa was never much in thinkin'
Spent most of his time chasin' women and drinkin'
But mother, I'm depending on you
To tell me the truth

But my mama she just said
[chorus (2x)]

Overall Meaning

The song "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone" by George Michael and Queen is a cover of the original song by The Temptations, which was released in 1972. The lyrics are about a son who never knew his father, who was known for being a rolling stone, never settling down in one place for too long. The son wants to know the truth about his father, but his mother refuses to tell him much, other than that his father left them alone when he died. The chorus repeats the line "papa was a rollin' stone, wherever he laid his hat was his home," which emphasizes his nomadic lifestyle.

The second verse talks about rumors surrounding the father, such as having other children and wives, and dealing in shady business while pretending to be a preacher. The son tries to get to the truth about his father's demise, but is met with more evasiveness from his mother. In the final verse, the son wonders if his father's inability to hold down a job and his vices, such as women and drinking, contributed to his early death.

I actually have this album in cassette tape! One of my absolute favorite songs by George Michael. I had the privilege of seeing him live in concert back in the early 90's. The man's voice is better live than on his recordings. Amazing voice.
