Salt Licks
George is Jones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You're a canon ball, you're like no one else at all
Please tell me how it is, I am very eager

You landed where you are, you're a pebble in the sand
I will give you what I can, but my supplies are meager

And pretty soon, pretty soon, pretty soon
I will see what you're made of
You're a clock, and you tick and you talk when you're setting the table

All of the tons and tons of salt
That you have brought, to buy my love
Of the tons and tons of salt
This little bit would be enough

You're marching band, that I'm holding in my hand
Tell me what to do, and I will listen

Now everyone is gone, or they're walking arm and arm
Never feel alone, I will take you home

It's alright, it's alright, it's alright
I know what you're made of
You're a line, from a point to a point, clever and able

All of the tons and tons of salt
That you have brought, to buy my love

Of the tons and tons of salt
This little bit would be enough

Overall Meaning

The song "Salt Licks" by George Jones is a metaphorical portrayal of a person's ability to offer love and support despite limited resources. The song starts by describing the person as a "canon ball" and unique individual unlike anyone else, and the singer is eager to know more about this person. The person is compared to a "pebble in the sand," a small, seemingly insignificant object, but the singer promises to provide them with what they can despite limited resources. The chorus describes the person's effort to offer their love and support, bringing "tons and tons of salt" to "buy" the singer's love, but the singer accepts even the smallest bit of salt as enough.

As the song progresses, the singer reassures the person that they will see what they are made of, and the person is compared to a clock, ticking and talking while setting the table. The singer compares the person to a "marching band" they can hold in their hand and get guidance from. The song ends with the person seemingly alone but the singer promising to take them home and assuring them that all is well.

Overall, the song portrays a simple message of appreciating the small things that people in our lives can offer despite scarcity, and their efforts to bring joy and love into our lives. It also showcases how powerful even the smallest acts of kindness can be in building relationships.

Is there any other info on them on the net? It's hard to find anything about them. Do they still make music? I only know of them from their song Ruins on Everwood. Thanks for the upload

I Will

They would send recordings back and forth to each other and put them together, since they were long distance. Unfortunately, they are no longer writing music together

Terrible Infant

Rod Jones, the guitarist, is in Idlewild, who has released something like seven studio albums, as well as various singles, EPS, compilations, and live albums. He's also in The Birthday Suit. Some of Idlewild's folkier stuff sounds like this, and Idlewild's vocalist, Roddy Woomble, has put out solo folk stuff that's not too dissimilar. Inara George, the lead vocalist, is in various bands, including The Bird and the Bee. Here's her Wiki page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inara_George

Sorry if you already know all this and were looking specifically for George Is Jones info! As best I remember it, they released these songs on MySpace and intended to put them out in some official physical capacity but never did.
