He wrote some extremely controversial, yet poetic songs. In doing so, he managed to change attitudes across France.
He was uncompromising when composing his songs. His tactical method of addressing issues was profound and often humorous, making him a unique and effective figure in the French community.
Brassens, born in 1921 in the small Mediterrenean port of Sete, wanted to be a poet. He realized very early however that poetry in the 20th century could hardly put bread on the table and instead set himself to become a singer.
He is much less famous internationally than contemporaries like Charles Aznavour, Edith Piaf and Yves Montand, as much of the impact of his songs came from the lyrics, which proved difficult to translate into other languages. He loved the Middle Ages and used a great deal of Old French vocabulary, as well as many classical - ie., Latin and Greek - references. Few people, even in France, possess the background to fully understand his songs.
Yet he was at the same time a hugely popular singer and many of his songs still carry a lot of appeal and relevance. In this sense, he can be compared to Boris Vian, to Jacques Brel, and to a lesser extent to Serge Gainsbourg.
He was very sophisticated, yet at the same time used profanity liberally. While he wasn't politically engaged, he was nevertheless unambiguously a leftist, many of his songs carrying blatant and buoyant anarchist overtones.
While his music was initially quite primitive, the 1950's St-Germain-des-Pres influence quickly made itself felt and while subdued and - in his mind - always secondary to the lyrics, it became increasingly sophisticated - to the point that many of his songs have been covered and reinterpretated by jazzmen (see for instance this UK site: www.projetbrassens.eclipse.co.uk)
He died in 1981, but up to this date (2006) there are few French people - including most of those born since - who can't sing along to his most famous song, Les Copains d'abord ("Friends foremost") or his "Bancs public" ("Public Benches").
For those interested, this site carries a number of (quite good) English tranlations of his songs: www.brassens.org

Georges Brassens Lyrics

In the village, unpretentious
I have a bad reputation
Whether I'm shunned or left alone
I pass for a je-ne-sais-quoi
I'm not wrong to anyone
Following my path of little man
But brav's people do not like that
We follow another road than they
No brav's people do not like that
We follow another road than they
Everyone is meditating about me
Except dumb, it goes without saying
The day of the Fourteenth of July
I stay in my cozy bed
The music that walks at a walk
This does not concern me
I'm not wrong to anyone
By not listening to the bugle that rings
But brav's people do not like that
We follow another road than they
No brav's people do not like that
We follow another road than they
Everyone shows me on the finger
Except penguins, it goes without saying
When I cross an unlucky thief
Pursued by an earthy
I fling my paw and why shut up
The cul-terre discovered on the floor
I'm not wrong to anyone
Stealing the apple thieves
But brav's people do not like that
We follow another road than they
No brav's people do not like that
We follow another road than they
Everyone is rushing on me
Except the cul-de-jute, it goes without saying
No need to be Jeremiah
For the eye to be the most promised
If they found a rope to their liking
They will pass it to my neck
I'm not wrong to anyone
By following the ch'mins that do not come to Rome
But brav's people do not like that
We follow another road than they
No brav's people do not like that
We follow another road than they
Everyone will come to see me hanged
Except the blind, of course!

I love Brassens! My Belgian mother used to listen to his songs in India and years later, I found a cassette tape in a garage sale in America and cried tears of joy hearing the old familiar tunes. Bought some CDs on Amazon and my heart just filled up with joy hearing his songs many that were new to me. I can sing many of them myself. The lyrics are a treasure trove of little used French words, and comprise the entire French lexicon. The music is simple on his guitar but the melodies and rhythm flow to a beat that matches the lyrics.
For example, this song Petit Bonhomme (La Mauvaise Reputation) has a walking gait beat. You can visualize this little man walking down the street in his irreverent, slightly rebellious gait. Like Brassens, he bucks convention and marches to his own tune.
In Les Sabots d'Hélène, the melody flows fast like a full stream gushing down a mountainside. There is a lilt and sway about it, like light dancing on water. This is the love that Hélène has to give, the analogy between water and love.
In Heureux Qui Comme Ulysse - you see the white caps of waves on a blue ocean and the sun streaming down on the manes of wild white horses in the Camargue. Such a radiant song.
In Hecatombe, the pace is frantic, as a rowdy fight is in progress. You get the rhythm in 'they fall, fall, fall, fall...' as you can see people landing punches and falling.
That is the genius of Brassens. The songs tell a story, with the rhythm of the story, and you can almost see the imagery in front of you.
J'adore Brassens !
