Moustaki was born Yussef Mustacchi on the 3rd May 1934 in Alexandria, Egypt, of Sephardic Jewish parents who had moved there from Corfu, and who ran a bookshop in the city. The family spoke Italian at home, but Georges (then Yussef) spoke Arabic with his friends and attended a French school to which his Francophile parents sent him and his sisters. In 1951 he moved to Paris, where he was inspired by the young Georges Brassens, in honour of whom he changed his name to Georges Moustaki.
Moustaki wrote and sang in French, Italian, Greek, Spanish, English, Yiddish, and Arabic. Early influences included Edith Piaf, with whom Moustaki carried on a year-long romance. His pan-national approach to music made him a star in Europe in the late sixties and early seventies.
He died on the 23rd May 2013 in Nice, France.

Dans la quartier de mon enfance
Dans cette ville ou j'ai traîné
Mon éternelle adolescence
Dans cette ville ou j'ai traîné
Mon éternelle adolescence
Dans ce pays qui m'a donné
Le pain l'amour l’insouciance
Le pain l'amour l’insouciance
Dans cette méditerranée
Ou me ramène mes errances
Dans ce monde ou j'ai promené
Toutes mes joies et mes souffrances
Dans et univers mal aimé
Ou je poursuis mon existence
Dans et univers mal aimé
Ou je poursuis mon existence
Dans cet amour abandonné
Aux quatre coins de l'espérance
Dans cet amour abandonné
Aux quatre coins de l'espérance
Dans la maison où je suis né
Dans la quartier de mon enfance
The lyrics of Georges Moustaki's song "Dans la maison où je suis né" describe the singer's deep-rooted connection to his place of birth, childhood neighborhood, and the city where he spent his eternal adolescence. He reflects on the country that provided him with sustenance, love, and carefree moments. The Mediterranean Sea is highlighted as a place where his wanderings bring him back, a symbol of both familiarity and escape. Moustaki traverses the world, experiencing both joy and suffering, in an unloved universe, yet he continues to exist and persist. The abandoned love he refers to is scattered in every corner of hope, emphasizing the longing and longing for love in his life. He concludes by reiterating his attachment to the house where he was born and the neighborhood of his childhood, indicating the profound impact they have had on him.

The house where I grew up
When I turn to my memories
I see again the house where I grew up
A million thoughts comes back to me:
I see roses in a garden
There, where the trees used to live,
now the city is there
and the house, the flowers I loved so much, no longer exists
they knew how to laugh, all my friends
they knew so well how to take part in my games
but everything must come to an end in life
and i had to leave, tears in my eyes
my friends ask me "why do you cry?"
and "traveling the world is better than staying.
You'll find everything here you cannot see,
an entire city that sleeps at night under the lights"
When I left this part of my childhood,
I knew already that I was leaving my heart
All of my friends envied my luck,
but i still think of their happiness,
of the carefree way that made them laugh
and it seems that I hear myself telling them:
"I'll come back one day, one fine morning amid your laughter,
yes, one day I'll take the first train of memory".
Time passes and here I am again,
searching in vain for the house I loved.
Where are the stones, where are the roses,
all of the things I held dear?
Of them and of me, no trace remains.
Other people, other houses have stolen their place.
There, where the trees live, now the city is there
and the house, where is the house where I grew up?
I don't know where my house is,
the house where I grew up.
Where is my house?
Who knows where my house is?
My house, where is my house?
Who knows where my house is?
