Moustaki was born Yussef Mustacchi on the 3rd May 1934 in Alexandria, Egypt, of Sephardic Jewish parents who had moved there from Corfu, and who ran a bookshop in the city. The family spoke Italian at home, but Georges (then Yussef) spoke Arabic with his friends and attended a French school to which his Francophile parents sent him and his sisters. In 1951 he moved to Paris, where he was inspired by the young Georges Brassens, in honour of whom he changed his name to Georges Moustaki.
Moustaki wrote and sang in French, Italian, Greek, Spanish, English, Yiddish, and Arabic. Early influences included Edith Piaf, with whom Moustaki carried on a year-long romance. His pan-national approach to music made him a star in Europe in the late sixties and early seventies.
He died on the 23rd May 2013 in Nice, France.

Là où l'on est personne
Là où l'on ne sait rien
Parler une autre langue
Entendre d'autres bruit's
Dire adieu à soi même a celui qu'on était

Dire adieu à soi-même a celui qu'on était
The lyrics to Georges Moustaki's song "Il faut voyager" (One must travel) convey the idea that one must travel and explore the world in order to truly discover oneself. The song encourages the listener to leave behind the familiar, where they are nobody and know nothing, and venture into the unknown.
Traveling is portrayed as a transformative experience, a way to break free from the confines of one's own existence. Speaking another language, hearing different sounds, tasting new fruits, and living other legends are all highlighted as experiences that broaden our horizons and enrich our lives. It is through travel that we can truly understand ourselves and the world around us.
The lyrics also emphasize the importance of solitude in this journey of self-discovery. Getting lost at the edge of the world and finding oneself alone allows for introspection and deep contemplation. Seeking new friends, walking unfamiliar streets, sleeping in different beds, and finding comfort in the arms of strangers all contribute to the sense of freedom and exploration that travel brings.
