Moustaki was born Yussef Mustacchi on the 3rd May 1934 in Alexandria, Egypt, of Sephardic Jewish parents who had moved there from Corfu, and who ran a bookshop in the city. The family spoke Italian at home, but Georges (then Yussef) spoke Arabic with his friends and attended a French school to which his Francophile parents sent him and his sisters. In 1951 he moved to Paris, where he was inspired by the young Georges Brassens, in honour of whom he changed his name to Georges Moustaki.
Moustaki wrote and sang in French, Italian, Greek, Spanish, English, Yiddish, and Arabic. Early influences included Edith Piaf, with whom Moustaki carried on a year-long romance. His pan-national approach to music made him a star in Europe in the late sixties and early seventies.
He died on the 23rd May 2013 in Nice, France.

Vous dormez au fond de nos coeurs,
Vous étiez tous seuls dans la mort,
Mais par elle vous vaincrez!
{reprise 5x}
The lyrics of Georges Moustaki's song Marche de Sacco et Vanzetti pay tribute to Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, two Italian immigrants who were wrongly convicted of robbery and murder in Massachusetts in the 1920s. Despite a lack of evidence, they were sentenced to death, sparking outrage and protests around the world. Moustaki's lyrics assert that although Sacco and Vanzetti may have died alone, they will ultimately triumph over their unjust fate.
The first two lines of the chorus, "Maintenant Nicolas et Bart, Vous dormez au fond de nos coeurs," translate to "Now Nicola and Bart, you sleep at the depths of our hearts." This suggests that even though Sacco and Vanzetti are deceased, their legacy lives on in the hearts of those who continue to fight for justice. The following two lines, "Vous étiez tous seuls dans la mort, Mais par elle vous vaincrez!" translate to "You were all alone in death, but through it you will conquer!" This highlights the idea that although Sacco and Vanzetti may have died alone, their memory will inspire others to continue the fight for justice and truth.
Overall, the lyrics of Marche de Sacco et Vanzetti honor the memory of two men who were unjustly condemned to death. Moustaki's words suggest that despite their tragic fate, Sacco and Vanzetti's legacy lives on as a symbol of resistance against injustice and oppression.
