yes. his orchestration of the piece is fantastic. Particularly his use of the cymbals. I've noticed other conductors don't have such pronounced cymbal usage.

Having performed in three operas now, I can honestly say that there is nothing more exciting for a cast standing backstage waiting to go on than hearing this overture (especially since so many rehearsals are with just the piano). Oh, and the pacing on this performance is perfection. :-)

Levine is one of my all-time favorite conductors. He has a straight-forward, no-nonsense, but deeply emotional approach and is a superb technician who brings out stunning precision and power from whatever ensemble he's leading. This is a perfect example.

Another thing you have to remember is that a lot of music isn't just straightforward like a pop song. I'm an opera singer, and when you are performing in an opera or operetta, being able to see the conductor is crucial at times, because you don't always have an intro to cue yourself in with, sometimes you have to start with the orchestra and you need to see his cue. Or the music will change and there's no 'beat' to pick up so you need to the see tempo from the conductor,

This is great music.It remains sunny square,many people mixing there...screams,laughs,joy,hubhub,everything is shining around,everyone is in emotions.first part is general description of sunny landscape,full of southern temperament.than dramatic part comes,it shows us that this opera,despite its gaiety,is tragedy.I can't understand why it was disliked after first performance.

<3 this song so much! I played it in orchestra when I was in 10th grade! Of course a high school orchestra doesn't sound this awesome, but it was still the funnest song ever to play ( I played 1st violin) and whenever I had a rough day, somehow playing that song always put me in a cheerful and giddy mood for the rest of the day!

This is tremendous! This orchestra cannot possibly be composed of the bored, distracted, half-assers described by Blair Tindall in "Mozart in the Jungle." My faith is re-established after reading that depressing book.

Music is something that is really dynamic. Each and every performance is different. Someone has to be there to do the coordination. Believe it or not, the conductor is probably the best musician on stage. A professional job of this nature will not exist for centuries if it had no purpose, don't you think? :)
