During the 1980s and early 1990s, Levert scored big hits with "Pop, Pop, Pop, Pop (Goes My Mind)", "Casanova", and "ABC-123" (not to be confused with the Jackson Five hit of the same name). As a solo artist, Gerald's hits included "I'd Give Anything (to Fall in Love)", "You Got That Love", and "Mr. Too Damn Good to You".
Gerald and Eddie collaborated together on many different occasions, and they recorded an album called Father and Son together.
Gerald Levert also sang the chorus on the Chris Rock spoken-word comedy piece, "No Sex (In the Champagne Room)".
In 2005, Levert's daughter Carlysia was featured on an episode of MTV's My Super Sweet Sixteen.
Levert passed away due to an apparent heart attack on November 10, 2006. Sister 2 Sister magazine reported that Gerald and his father had just returned from a 10-day trip to South Africa where they had met with Nelson Mandela and were treated like royalty. Upon Gerald's return, he was excited about his upcoming album, which is due early in 2007. Gerald died in his sleep.
I Don't Get Down Like That

Your mind and your soul
To take time to give you
The attention you want
No special G items
Love and words on a cell
Little things you be needing
Never never that, never never that
I wouldn't do baby, never never that, no
Do you like it, do, no, oh, oh
See I don't get down like that
Give you all those private things, baby
See candlelight dinners
And hot bubble baths
Relieving your tension
Massaging your back
Girl, how did your day go?
We talk about then
A little time that we need
Girl, you'll never go back
Never never that, never never that
Never, never never that, no
Do you like it, do, no, oh, oh
I don't get down like that
Do you like it, do, no, oh, oh
See I don't get down like that
You'd be loved the way you're Supposed to be
If I was your man, you was my girl
We would be loving 'round the world
And you'd live in the life of luxury
One day go by without you next to me
Love without no lemony, nothing at all
Like an elevator girl, I'll come when you call
Up, down, in and out
From the favorite spot love it to the ground, ground
Do you like it, do, no, oh, oh
I don't get down like that
Do you like it, do, no, oh, oh
See I don't get down like that
Do you like it, do, no, oh, oh
I don't get down like that
Do you like it, do, no, oh, oh
See I don't get down like that
Do you like it, do, no, oh, oh
I don't get down like that
Do you like it, do, no, oh, oh
See I don't get down like that
In the song "I Don't Get Down Like That" by Gerald Levert, he is urging his partner to take care of herself both physically and mentally. He encourages her to take time for herself and to prioritize her own needs. He emphasizes that material possessions are not the key to a successful relationship, but rather, the small gestures and attention that are given to each other are what truly matter.
Levert goes on to describe some of the ways that he would care for his partner, including candlelight dinners, hot bubble baths, and massages. He indicates that he would be attentive to her needs and would be genuinely interested in how her day went. He emphasizes that he would never neglect or ignore her, but would always be there for her.
Overall, the song is a plea for a healthy and loving relationship, built on mutual respect and care for one another's well-being. Levert makes it clear that he is not interested in superficial or material things, but rather, in a deep, meaningful connection with his partner.
