Rotterdam born Cox had 2 hit singles in the Netherlands in the 1970's, "Het is weer voorbij die mooie zomer" and "1948". The music for both songs was taken from popular songs from abroad, the Dutch lyrics for both songs are original and by no means a translation of the original songs. Cox has also played in a Dutch TV sitcom and was a co-writer of this sitcom "Toen was geluk heel gewoon" which was based on the american sitcom "The Honeymooners"

Toen was geluk heel gewoon
Buiten huilt de wind om 't huis
Maar moeder breit een warme sjaal
En het ganzebord op tafel
stond er de volgende moregen nog helemaal
Ook gingen wij naar 't bos
Daar zijn we toen verdwaald
Van de wag geraakt, carriere gemaakt
Heel die pannekoekensmaak vergeten
En Nederland herrees onder Drees
Fanny Blankers Koen die won vier maal goud in Londen
Als je jokte was dat zonde
De legpuzzle kwam klaar
In het derde vredesjaar
Toen was geluk heel gewoon
Toen was geluk heel gewoon
The song "1948" by Dutch singer Gerard Cox reminisces about the simpler times of post-war Netherlands while acknowledging the struggles and poverty of the time. The lyrics describe a cold, drafty house with a roaring stove and makeshift insulation in the form of paper stuffed in the cracks. Despite their poverty, the singer recalls the warmth of a cup of tea and the entertainment of the radio. The song also references the excitement of Fanny Blankers-Koen's four gold medals at the 1948 Olympics in London and the post-war reconstruction efforts under Prime Minister Willem Drees.
The nostalgic refrain "Toen was geluk heel gewoon" ("Back then, happiness was normal") highlights the theme of finding contentment and joy in simple pleasures, such as taking a bath, playing board games with family, and feeling safe at home. The song takes on a melancholy tone with the line "Die schooltas bleek het eerste teken/dat de zaak wal was bekeken" ("That schoolbag was the first sign/that the affair had already been settled"), referring to the singer's realization that their poverty would limit their opportunities in life.
