To end this beauty?
To keep us under foot
They bury us in soot

To ship us off to war

The lyrics of Walking in Space by Gerome Ragni and James Rado can be interpreted in different ways, but the general theme revolves around freedom, beauty, and sensory experiences. The opening lines allude to a secluded space where the singer can express themselves freely without external interference, with doors locked and blinds pulled to emphasize the idea of intimacy and secrecy. The flames, low lights and colors evoke mood and atmosphere, setting the tone for the rediscovery of sensation and sensory experiences the singer has while walking in space. The reference to body repeats multiple times, emphasizing the idea of physicality and embodiment, which is contrasted with the lack of sensation when they are buried in soot or shipped off to war.
The main idea of this song is to express the importance of sensory experiences, freedom, and self-expression. The colors included in the lyrics symbolize sensory experiences and heighten the sensual aspect of the song. As the song progresses, they expose the idea of oppression, where those in power use force to bury the beauty of life. The dive refers to a space of liberation, where the singer rediscovers the beauty of life and the purpose of peace. The reference to war is an allusion to the Vietnam War, which resonated with youth culture in the ’60s.

Drew Masse....I felt the same way and still do! I tear up and my heart swells at many points throughout this soundtrack. I was thrilled to find a vintage-era copy of the Original Broadway Cast recording in my parents' record collection MANY years ago and subsequently learned every lyric by heart.
I find that a number of the issues--social, political, chemical, and spiritual--explored in these songs still concern us today.
Happily these songs are still balm for weary souls in these trying times!
