Gerry Marsden (1942-2021) formed Gerry & The Pacemakers in the late 1950s with his brother, Fred Marsden (died 2006), Les Chadwick (1943-2019) and Arthur Mack. They rivalled The Beatles early in their career, playing in the same areas of Hamburg, Germany, and Liverpool, England, and being from Liverpool, managed by Brian Epstein, and recorded by George Martin. Mack was replaced on piano by Les Maguire ()born 1941) around 1961. They are known to have rehearsed at Camell Laird shipping yard at Birkenhead.
They began recording in early 1963 with "How Do You Do It?", a Mitch Murray written song that both Adam Faith and The Beatles had turned down (in the latter case because they wanted to record their own material, specifically "Please Please Me"). The song became a number one hit, until being replaced at the top by The Beatles' third single, "From Me to You".
Gerry & the Pacemakers next two singles, Murray's "I Like It" and Rodgers and Hammerstein's "You'll Never Walk Alone", both also reached number one in the UK Singles Chart. Never before had the first three singles by a performer all reached the top spot (the feat would not be duplicated until Frankie Goes to Hollywood did it in the 1980s).
Despite this early success, Gerry & the Pacemakers never had another number one single in the U.S. Gerry Marsden began writing most of their own songs, including "It's All Right", "I'm the One", and "Ferry Cross the Mersey", as well as their first and biggest U.S. hit, "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying". All of these represented the band's light, poppy, enjoyable sound. They also starred in a moderately successful early 1965 film called Ferry Cross the Mersey, for which Marsden wrote much of the soundtrack.
By later in 1965, though, their popularity was rapidly declining on both sides of the Atlantic. They lacked the innovation of the Beatles and did not have the rawer musical and visual edge of some of the other British Invasion groups, and they soon seemed un-hip. They disbanded in October 1966 with much of their latter recorded material never released in the UK.
Gerry Marsden became a popular cabaret and children's TV entertainer. He reformed the band in 1972 with prominent Liverpool musicians Jose McLaughlin, Billy Kinsley and Pete Clarke. In April 1973, this second version of the group became the only Merseybeat band to ever record for the John Peel Show on BBC Radio. The tracks from that show have now been included on the album Gerry & the Pacemakers Live at the BBC, released on Parlophone Records in October 2018. Subsequently, Marsden occasionally toured with various line-ups of the band on the oldies circuit. Gerry Marsden announced his retirement on 29 November 2018.
The band is probably best remembered for their version of "You'll Never Walk Alone," which has become the anthem for Liverpool Football Club in England. Liverpool's fans sing the song before every match at Anfield, their home stadium.
Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying

The night's the time for all your tears
Your heart may be broken tonight
But tomorrow in the morning light
Don't let the sun catch you cryin'
The night-time shadows disappear
And with them go all your tears
For every girl and boy
So don't let the sun catch you cryin'
We know that cryin's not a bad thing
But stop your cryin' when the birds sing
It may be hard to discover
That you've been left for another
But don't forget that love's a game
And it can always come again
Oh don't let the sun catch you cryin'
Don't let the sun catch you cryin', oh no
Oh, oh, oh
The song "Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying" by Gerry & The Pacemakers is a classic ballad that encourages someone going through heartbreak to hold on and not give up hope. The first verse advises the listener to cry at night, when they are alone and away from prying eyes. The use of imagery of the "night-time shadows" disappearing with the dawn creates a sense of new beginnings and optimism, even in the face of heartache.
The second verse reinforces this hopefulness, stating that the morning will bring joy for everyone, not just the person who is hurting. The lyrics remind us that love is a game, and although it may not always work out the way we want it to, new love can always come again if we remain open to it.
Overall, the song is a message of encouragement and positivity for anyone who is going through heartbreak. It reassures the listener that they are not alone, and that there is always hope for better days ahead.

Don't let the sun catch you cryin'
Don't cry in the presence of light
The night's the time for all your tears
Cry in the darkness, when no one can see
Your heart may be broken tonight
You may be feeling heartbroken at the moment
But tomorrow in the morning light
Things will look brighter in the morning
Don't let the sun catch you cryin'
Don't let anyone see you cry in the morning
The night-time shadows disappear
Darkness fades away with the night
And with them go all your tears
Your sadness disappears with the darkness
For the morning will bring joy
Morning will be a happier time
For every girl and boy
Everyone, no matter who they are
So don't let the sun catch you cryin'
Don't show your sadness, it won't help
We know that cryin's not a bad thing
It's okay to cry sometimes
But stop your cryin' when the birds sing
Don't dwell on sadness, enjoy the beauty of nature
It may be hard to discover
It can be difficult to find out
That you've been left for another
That someone else has taken your love
But don't forget that love's a game
Love can be unpredictable and not always fair
And it can always come again
But there's always a chance for love again
Oh don't let the sun catch you cryin'
Don't show your sadness to others
Don't let the sun catch you cryin', oh no
Hide your tears from the sunlight
Oh, oh, oh

I was all set to agree, then - after some thought - realized that "Ferry Cross the Mersey" might be the first song someone would name if you mentioned Gerry and the Pacemakers.

Incredible, dramatic production with the strings, oboe, trombone and ticking drum stick. Quite unlike most British groups at the time.
