How Do You Do It?
Gerry & The Pacemakers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

How do you do what you do to me?
I wish I knew
If I knew how you do it to me
I'd do it to you

How do you do what you do to me?
I'm feeling blue
Wish I knew how you do it to me
But I haven't a clue

You give me a feeling in my heart
Like an arrow passin' through it
Suppose that you think you're very smart
But won't you tell me how do you do it?

How do you do what you do to me?
If I only knew
Then perhaps you'd fall for me
Like I fell for you

You give me a feeling in my heart
Like an arrow passin' through it
Suppose that you think you're very smart
But won't you tell me how do you do it?

How do you do what you do to me?
If I only knew
Then perhaps you'd fall for me

Like I fell for you
When I do it to you

Overall Meaning

These lyrics to Gerry & The Pacemakers's song How Do You Do It? express the singer's confusion and fascination with someone who has a special power over them. The singer is desperate to know how this person can make them feel the way they do, and even wishes they could do the same thing back. The repetition of the question "How do you do what you do to me?" emphasizes the singer's confusion and desire for answers.

The lyrics suggest that there is a certain level of vulnerability in the singer's feelings, as they admit to feeling blue and not knowing how to replicate the feelings that the other person creates in them. The line "Suppose that you think you're very smart" suggests that the other person may be aware of their power over the singer, and might even be using it intentionally.

Overall, the lyrics capture the feeling of being captivated by someone, and the frustration and longing that can come with trying to understand and replicate the magic of their presence.

I can relay to that I have exactly to same.
Like, where have all to good times gone. I'm 63 and a Dutchman. Time went fast much too fast for me. Soon my time has come and I don't want to go, I hang too much on life although I have nothing to be proud of, nothing achieved but I just love to be alive the simple things of live and I try to force myself to stand still and look back now and than.
We arrive in a time that we realize that more than the half is already passed. A good friend of mine asked his father when he was 93, ,,was it fast, pap ?"
And his father answered, ,,very fast"
And those words keeps coming frequently back in my head. I wish we could be much older like a 200 years but not feel that old as we do feel now, weak and not so energenic. Well, we humans are mortal it's inevitable but it hard to accept because,...I don't want to die I am afraid of dying afraid of thee unknown and is the an afterlife and how will I die,...suffering???
I think too much about these thoughts and I hate it. All of a sudden it pops up on my head, "dying" how will I , we, die ?? Will I see my parents grandparents and my dogs back again??? I don't know, some say, ,,you will see them back, don't worry now !" But I always say,
,,I will know when I am dead !", ,,I will thàn know if there really is an afterlife"
When we're dead we will have all answer of question we have now.
Is really over or do we go to an other vacuum or become a spirit or an angle. Well, we will know,... or not.
Have a good restand of your life and I will (hopefully🙏) too.
Untill we maybe are up there. XX. Dag engel. 🇾🇪✌🏼

Takes me back to 1963 17 yrs old and a life to live.
Now 76 yrs old listening to this and wondering where all those years have gone.
Seems like only yesterday.

same here I loved Gerry and met him 3 times in Hull and had a photo with hime - nice memories

@awkwarddude

Me, too. Same year, same age. Same life ahead of all of us. Where has the time gone. The years of the folk songs and The British Music invasion, Viet Nam War... Memories. The years of our youth and the best music ever.

How different life would have been, if only I had killed my next-door-neighbour with a hatchet.
