My Funny Valentine
Gerry Mulligan Chet Baker Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Your my funny Valentine, sweet comic Valentine,
You make me smile with my heart,
Your looks are laughable, un-photographical,
Yet you´re my favourite work of art

Is your figure less than Greek?
Is your mouth a little weak?
When you open it to speak, are you smiling?
But don´t change a hair for me,
Not if you care for me.
Stay little valentine, stay!
Each day is Valentine´s Day

Each day is Valentine´s Day

Overall Meaning

The song "My Funny Valentine" is a classic jazz standard originally written by Rodgers and Hart for the 1937 musical Babes In Arms. Gerry Mulligan & Chet Baker's version of the song has become one of the most iconic recordings of the tune. The song is a ballad that speaks about a lover who is unconventional in their looks and mannerisms, but is still deeply adored and appreciated by the singer. The opening line of the song, "My funny Valentine, sweet comic Valentine", sets the tone for the rest of the lyrics. The singer acknowledges the unconventional aspects of their lover but also highlights their endearing qualities, such as their ability to make the singer smile just by being themselves.

The second verse of the song delves deeper into the unconventional aspects of the lover, asking if their figure is less than Greek and their mouth a little weak. But the singer quickly dismisses these perceived flaws, recognizing that they are part of what makes their lover unique, special and beautiful. The last verse of the song is a plea to the lover to stay the way they are, as every day can be Valentine's Day when you're with someone you love.

In conclusion, "My Funny Valentine" is a timeless love song that celebrates the uniqueness and beauty of unconventional love. The melody and lyrics work together to create a feeling of tenderness and appreciation for the quirks and traits that make each person special and unique.

@kerota

very best take

@57dogsbody

Chet does a very clever thing here: he takes an upbeat song with (dare I say it) almost jokey lyrics and makes it heartbreaking in a simple beautiful way. If you know anybody who doesn't understand you when you tell them Chet is a very soulful player, play them this.

@bondmatty

This is played so sensitively. My favourite version.
