In the early part of the decade, several American politicians attacked rappers, including the Geto Boys (though most famously Ice-T and 2 Live Crew). A high-profile incident in which Bushwick Bill (actually a dwarf) lost an eye in a shooting incident with his girlfriend helped sales for their third album, We Can't Be Stopped, which showed Bushwick on the cover being carted through a hospital by Scarface and Willie D. They responded to being dropped by Geffen on the title track ("We Can't Be Stopped"), and "Mind Playing Tricks On Me" became a hit in the rap community.

The Geto Boys’ song Assassins tells the stories of two different men, Johnny See and Jukebox, and their descent into a life of crime and violence. The lyrics are graphic and disturbing, painting a picture of a harsh reality in which these men feel that they have no choice but to turn to violent means to survive. The first verse follows Johnny See as he steals jewelry from a blind man and then attempts to pawn it, only to find out it is fake. He then proceeds to rob his former teacher, Miss Elaine, and beats her with his gun when he believes she is going to snitch on him. The second verse follows Jukebox, who is a runner on bail, selling drugs and making loads of money. He murders Sheila, who he refers to as “Godzilla,” and then later picks up a hitchhiker, has sex with her, and kills her as well.

I brandished a machete hidden in my car and used it to brutally murder Sheila.

My own father, who was a priest, was killed by my hand.
I drove off the road, so I could offer a ride
I intentionally drove off the road to pick up a female hitchhiker.

After giving the woman a ride, we arrived and she thanked me for the ride.

I engaged in sexual activity with the woman until I physically could not continue.

When the woman tried to run away, I chased her while naked and made sure she was punished.
